Why AVB’s Spurs appointment is doomed from the start:

Image for Why AVB’s Spurs appointment is doomed from the start:

The inevitable has happened; André Villas-Boas will take over as the new Spurs manager with immediate effect. The 34 year old is one of the youngest managers in European football but became the Chelsea manager last year after winning the Europa League at Porto, almost emulating the success of Jose Mourinho, that was pretty much the only reason he got the top job at Stamford Bridge. But after nine months of underperforming with The Blues, he lost his job and has been jobless since (despite being linked with every single job in world football).

Early signs would show that the Tottenham faithful are pleased with AVB’s appointment, but for me he’s nothing more than your average Joe (or José in this case), who’s been lucky, and will end up selling used cars sooner rather than later. One of Villas-Boas’ main policies at Chelsea was to immediately chuck older players onto the scrap heap. Bad news for Ledley, Jermain, Brad and co. The clash of personalities also lead to his demise at Chelsea, this must rule out any chance of a return for fans favourite Emmanuel Adebayor.

Apparently Daniel Levy is willing to trust this bloke with £50m to spend on new players, whether this includes the sale fee of Luca Modric is unknown. For someone who’s list of signings include Raul Merieles and Oriol Romeu he’s gone nowhere near proving  himself in the transfer market, to trust him with this amount of money would be madness, if not financial suicide.

If Villas-Boas is to succeed at Tottenham he must adapt to a new style of football. Something which is alien to him. For a start he must learn to use Gareth Bale as a wide left midfielder and buy a half decent right midfielder (not play a striker out wide) and a brand new forward. As well as that he must strengthen his central defence.

I’d love to see AVB succeed, it’s always nice to see a new team competing for the title, but sadly I don’t see it happening. AVB has a serious lack of control over his dressing room, is imtimidated by his senior players, is too sensitive to tatctical adjustment and not provern in English football. But having said that football’s a strange old game…

I’ll leave you with this…

Does the name Juande Ramos ring any bells? He was the last foreign manager to be brought in to take Tottenham Hotspur to ‘the next level’. Mr Ramos was sacked before November during the 2008-09 season having drawn two matches and lost the rest in Spurs’ first eight games of the season. Juande Ramos is now managing Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. That well known Ukrainian team.

Is that AVB’s fate or can he rectify his awful history in England?

Only time will tell….

I think he could prove to be the best manager we have had since Bill Nick. We as Tottenham fans need to get behind him 100% as we all know he will face a media witch hunt after displacing their darling Redknapp. I for one was happy to see the club moving away from signing players like Nelson and having a manager who wanted to keep him on and yet send Caulker out on loan again.
We all know that funding the new stadium will take a great effort and i believe Levy wanted a coach who could keep the team competitive without breaking the bank.
Lets hope our faith will be rewarded. COYS.

  • Chrispurs says:

Are you a gooner? Give the guy a chance; he did incredibly well with Porto.

  • Paul B says:

Rubbish article. Are you forgetting that Carlo Ancelotti with his success in Italy was sacked by Chelsea? World Cup winner Phil Scolari, sacked by Chelsea. Jose Mourinho, sacked by Chelsea. You cannot baseline a career from a stint managing a club owned and dictated by a lunatic billionaire with no patience. I’m not saying AVB will win the league with Spurs but he’s got as much chance as anyone else who has tried to push Spurs forward in the past.

  • Ben says:

And I’ll leave you with this… AVB was a very poor appointment by Chelsea, and a disgraceful showcase of the lack of respect that exists within some modern day footballers. With the axis of power at that club feeling threatened, and being led by a man who they remember as a kid in his 20s handing out tactical advice as he did under Mourinho, not to mention the lack of support he received from his superiors, he was destined to fail at Chelsea. After all think about the managers that have taken on the Mourinho-built squad that still exists today: Grant, kept the team ticking over (Success, relatively given they were a John Terry slice away from the CL), Scolari (Fail, tried to impose a new system), Hiddink (Success, kept it ticking over), Ancelotti (Success, kept it ticking over), AVB (Fail, tried to impose a new system).

There’s no doubting that AVB got stuff wrong at Chelsea, but don’t flagrantly disregard the circumstances, and how vastly different they will be at Spurs. ‘Doomed from the start’… pipe down

  • buddha9 says:

the guy has no communication skills — what happened at chelsea was entirely his fault — came in on a wave of enthusiasm & the jose effect — older players tried to play his style – arsenal at the bridge for eg – he’s insecure, has really poor communication skills has little training ground experience — after all his entire time with Jose was as a opposition scout- simply doesn’t know how to manage players
primed to be a disaster. good luck spurs!

  • mr chelsea says:

AVB’srecord in the premier is better than RDM’s i think you got a good manager and i was sad to see him go from Chelsea

  • Ben says:

Oh, and RDM (success, restored the old guard)

OK I’m done, guess I hadn’t lost all interest

    • mr chelsea says:

who basically played when they felt like it. Let us not forget in the CL we were bloody lucky. play those two teams the same way 100 times and we would lose 95+ times.

  • BOB says:

Joseph Perry what the fuck are you talking about? With the time you took to write this you could have done anything with your life.

  • Jay says:

Ramos didn’t speak english and had weird training methods and diets that’s why he wasn’t great even though a trophy was won under him he couldn’t communicate his ideas. Avb played attacking football at porto and got his tactics spot on. The problem at chelsea was down to two things. Firstly, chelsea where not set up to play attacking football which was what roman wanted avb to do. They have never played that way under roman and simply didn’t have the players with the attributes to play that way. Spurs do and have been playing that way. And secondly, he was asked to bring in the attacking football with younger players and weed out the older. But in doing this cole, terry, drogba, lampard all chucked there toys out of the pram and didn’t perform causing unrest. There egos run chelsea. At spurs we don’t have that.

  • Steve says:

You also don’t have Champions league fottball

  • Ray says:

I’ve read some piss poor aticles on this site and others admittedly but this one is right up there with them. Complete bollocks almost from start to finish, very poorly thought out and deliveerd. Good managers do not suddenly become bad managers over night. AVB’s record speaks volumes. His record at Porto is astonishing, to go through an entire season unbeaten and win that league by 20 points is remarkable. Not only that, but to win the Portuguese equivilant of the FA Cup and the Europa Legue in the same year speaks for itself. Not even the so called “special one” did that in one season. You might call it luck, I and most others prefer to call it great management irrespective of what footballing nation it occurs.
I’m old enough to remember the Great Brian Clough lasting 44 day’s in charge of Leeds United before they sacked him only for the man to take up the reigns at Notts Forest and win two (2) Champions League trophys for them. Prior to his Leeeds nightmare, he won the old English First Division with Derby County to boot.. Rafa Benitez was sacked twice and took a team to relegation in Spain before eventually given another chance at Valencia. What did he do, break the monopoly of Real and Barca by winning LaLega twice with Valencia. He then took over at Liverpool and won the FA Cup and the Champions League for them. There is a long list of good managers being given the boot from one club only to resurface elsewhere and become great. Another example was Sir Bobby Robson, sacked at Fulham, greater things followed as we all know.
To draw comparisons between Ramos and AVB is pathetic. For a start, Ramos couldnt speak a word of English so communication with the players was very difficult and done through an interpreter, Gus Poyet. AVB is multilingual (that means speaks several languages for your information).
As for him becoming a used car salesman, perhaps you could suggest that for your mate Redknapp, now theres a used car salesman if ever there was one.

  • Ozspurs says:

Yep everyone is entitled to their opinion. But you’re a wanker period. The amount of negativity surrounding AVB is pitiful. I hope he shoves it straight up the cynics ars*.

  • Simon says:

What a pathetic article – I only got part way down and had top scroll to the comments, just to see what people are saying about it. Thank god you are not in Levy’s shoes! You judge someone on such a short period and ignore the circumstances! What made me laugh and decide that the rest of the article wasn’t worth reading was the bit about, ‘…AVB needs to learn to play Gareth Bale on the left..’ – What? AVB hasn’t managed us yet, that was hopeless, lucky, tactically inept Redknapp who was responsible for that.. From that point I realised it is purely your opinion that has been fed by listening to other people’s opinions (mainly the media, which tbh, are so biased (and manipulative) it is best to always rely on information from your clubs official site and to always take it with a pinch of salt).

In future, do some research and come up with more tangible arguments and you might make it in the world of journilism!

  • cynical says:

This must be the article written by a bitter wannabe in the most puerile manner yet, this close season. a complete travesty of an article which comes across and ill-researched and baseless. Immature opinions are presented as facts and the ego of the writer merely presents the rest of us to fall aboui laughing at the crass ignorance. Given his criticism and superior attitude to a self-made multi-millionaire,Daniel Levy, begs the question of why is Perry wasting his undoubted talent here, Shouldn’t he be adding to his great wealth accumulation with such acumen? Perry? Written more like by Kevin as it’s “so unfair”.

  • D-e-B says:

Your argument is soo weak…it’s timid conjecture, and earnestly embarassing. Your understanding of Spurs is non existent per your inane scribbling…a little research would have probably led you to some level of a balanced argument, considering that wether AVB will succeed or not is only a fact that one can only speculate on…it’s moronic to believe soo forthrightly otherwise, unless you are christ reincarnate himself!!…i wont bother commenting on your weak player tactical points, as you ain’t introducing nothing into the argument that hasn’t been touched on…pure rubbish!!

  • Joseph Perry says:

Thank you for your responses, I imagine that the majority of comments come from Spurs fans.

I made it clear in the article that I wish AVB all the best of luck, and gave my opinion on his appointment, believing that it was ‘doomed from the start’.

I am a Nottingham Forest fan myself, neither Chelsea nor Arsenal. I believe that it won’t work for AVB due to a variety of reasons, of which I have made clear.

I appreciate your comments but I only gave my personal opinion and you gave your opinions in response.

In response to the people questioning my writing skills: We are always looking for new writers just email thisisfutbol.com@snack-media.com . Thanks.
