The 2011-12 season saw shocking twists and turns all the way to the final minute, literally.  Who will forget Demba Ba’s sensational goal, defying all the laws of physics to receive applause from everyone inside Stamford Bridge?

Or Sergio Aguero’s 93rd minute title winner on the final day of the season, prompting an extraordinary piece of commentary from the wonderfully named Sam Matterface (well worth a listen to on youtube if you can)?  No one, that’s for sure.  The twentieth season of the Premier League was full of surprises and I’m positive that the twenty first will be no different.

Here’s my top three potential surprises:

3) At number three is Chelsea.  The Blues defied all odds to lift the Champions League last season and raised eyebrows around the world.  It’s no secret that the ‘golden generation’ are getting older and it won’t be long before Frank Lampard, John Terry, Petr Cech, Ashley Cole and Michael Essien retire but now it would seem that Chelsea are ready to replace them. With Gary Cahill and David Luiz supplying a potentially long term partnership at the centre of defence, Euro 2012 winners Juan Mata (who only played six minutes of the final but still managed to score) and golden boot winner Fernando Torres appearing to find their form as well as new signing, Belgian goalscoring midfielder Eden Hazard it appears that the Chelsea backbone of the past decade is ready to be replaced with a refreshed, young and talented new one.

Roberto Di Matteo’s managed to find the best out of his players over the past six months, even if he has been more of a mate then a gaffer to the team, in winning the Champions League with Chelsea he’s succeed where José Mourinho, Luis Scholari and Carlo Ancelotti have all failed. With talk of Brazilian forward Hulk joining the team it would appear that they can only go from strength to strength. I fully expect them to win the FIFA Club World Cup and even turn a few heads in the league,  could the title be in reach?

2) My second tip to turn more than a few heads this season is Queens Park Rangers. The club finished 17th in the table last season and ended up in the headlines for all the wrong reasons after then-captain Joey Barton’s vile, violent and vicious, to say the least, behavior at the Etihad on the final day of the season. But after a busy start to the transfer window it would appear that they have found the right balance between experience and youth as well as defence and attack.
