Should Tottenham cough-up £30m for this highly-rated youngster?

‘Raiding’ Real Madrid has worked well for Tottenham before. Last time they plundered Madrid, they ended up with the bulky, yet talented frame of Dutchman Rafael van der Vaart. His goals, technical ability and level-headedness have added a lot more to Tottenham than his £8m price-tag would suggest. So surely it’s time to do it again, right?

Whilst Real Madrid have a wealth of talent on their books, very few players actually want to leave, given their lucrative contracts and Madrid rarely ever have any real need to sell. Targeting a Madrid player often seems like a fool’s errand.

Which brings me to a rumour from a recent edition of the Metro: they claim that Tottenham have lodged a £5m bid for 19-year-old Spanish youngster Jese Rodriguez.

The youngster produced a couple of excellent showings during the recent Under-19 European Championships and caught the eye of Arsenal, Manchester City and Benfica. It’s a little surprising then that it’s Tottenham who have taken the plunge and made a bid. The disappointing news: Real Madrid have reportedly turned down the bid and told Andre Villas-Boas that the only way he’ll be sold is if Spurs meet his £30m release clause.

That’s a fair sum for somebody who’s got a lot of potential but hasn’t really proven himself on this big stage as of yet. He remains in the Madrid B team and probably wont break out next season.

That hasn’t stopped a lot of fans have suggesting that Rodriguez be used as part of a swap deal for their wantaway midfielder Luka Modric. But surely Tottenham can do better than this? With Real Madrid’s squad positively bursting with talent, there’s plenty of players on the sidelines who deserve better. Nuri Sahin springs to mind.

Rodriguez is a talent, no doubt. Scoring five goals in the U19 European championships and leading your side to the trophy is no mean feat. But he’s still young. He’s still got a lot to prove. Tottenham need a player who can deliver the goods immediately. Most of all, they just can’t afford to spend that much money on a young player.

Andre Villas-Boas is a sensible man. So let’s hope that he plans out his transfers with a good deal of consideration. If he gives this one a miss, I certainly wouldn’t mind.

What’s your take? Would Rodriguez be a good addition to Tottenham’s squad? Or is he too much of a gamble?

Spudley, you sir are clearly a man with superb business logic! I’m struggling to understand why you’re not replacing Alan Sugar on the apprentice, as such brains are wasted on a virgin keyboard warrior.
