Should AVB really start his new Tottenham career by raiding his old club?

So, Andre Villas-Boas is back and he has a tough act to follow. After replacing Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea, he’s now going to replace fan favourite Harry Redknapp at Tottenham. Harry was full of personality and endeavour and most importantly, he was the man that made Spurs a genuinely competitive force once more. Not everybody agreed with his dismissal, but that’s a choice that the Spurs board made and we have to move on.

Let’s hope that Villas-Boas can step up to the plate. One thing’s for sure – his action over this summer is likely to be essential. Can he keep hold of Tottenham’s best players? Can he make sensible additions? If some players leave can he find the right players to replace them?

Whilst Gareth Bale has just signed a new contract, the futures of players like Luka Modric and Rafael van der Vaart are still very much up in the air. With Spurs unable to offer them Champions League action, there’s reason to doubt that they’ll want to stick around.

But bringing in good signings may convince the doubters that Tottenham are heading in the right direction. Which brings me to this rumour from The Metro: It’s claimed that Villas-Boas is lining up a move for Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge who is Spurs’ ‘top target’.

With Chelsea seriously weighing up a move for FC Porto striker Hulk, there’s reason to believe that Sturridge may fancy his chances elsewhere. Since taking over at Chelsea, Roberto Di Matteo hasn’t given him much of a look in and a player of his quality must be itching for regular first team football. He’s likely to be a big part of England’s future and he has the pace and goal-scoring ability to make an instant impact at White Hart Lane. The Metro value him at £10m and for that price he’d be a bit of a steal.

But it’s worth remember that Sturridge didn’t exactly have a great time under AVB’s control whilst they were both at Chelsea. The Portuguese often elected to deploy Sturridge on the wings instead of his favoured centre-forward position. Could this affect his decision to move to Tottenham?

Either way, he’s the kind of signing that Spurs should be making. Good, affordable and forward-thinking. Here’s hoping that this is more than just a rumour.
