The never ending van Persie dilemma

As you should know by now, Robin van Persie is a wanted man this summer. 3 huge clubs, Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus have all publicly made bids but they have been rejected. There is a lot of talk as to where van Persie should go but of these 3 clubs I believe that the one club he shouldn’t go to and the one club that shouldn’t be interested in him is Manchester City.

Manchester City already have a wide selection with 4 established world class strikers in the form of Aguero, Tevez, Balotelli and Dzeko. If they remain happy, they have more than enough ability to fire Manchester City to the Premier League and Champions League titles. Add 20 year old John Guidetti (after 20 goals in 23 games on loan at Feyenoord last season) to that list then it soon becomes clear that no club in the world can compete with Manchester City’s current strike power. How would van Persie fit into this? Surely a striker or two would have to be offloaded in order for the players to all get enough playing time and remain happy.

However, selling these strikers to make room for van Persie may make little sense as all their strikers are of a younger age than van Persie and therefore will remain in their prime for longer. As well as this, van Persie has spent a lot of his career injured and despite his heroics of last season he is very prone to becoming injured again which could cause problems in the balance of City’s squad. Finally, with Financial Fair Play rules now in motion, City have to be careful after the heavy spending of the last few years.

On the other hand, van Persie joining United could also be very problematic for City as he would link up with Wayne Rooney in a potentially devastating front two that would certainly be first choice at Old Trafford, therefore keeping van Persie happier for longer. However, Arsene Wenger may refuse to sell his best player to long time enemy, Sir Alex Ferguson.

Juventus are interested in van Persie and in my opinion seem like his most likely destination as they have spent a lot of money this summer in preparation for an assault on Europe’s elite. Another club that may become interested is AC Milan after selling Zlatan Ibrahimovic. One option that no longer seems viable is van Persie remaining at Arsenal after such a public battle between van Persie, Arsenal and all the chasing clubs this summer.

In summary, I believe it would be best for Robin van Persie to leave England in order for him to win elite honours that have so far eluded him during his time at Arsenal whilst he still has the chance, as he is soon to be 29 years old and this may be his final opportunity for a big money move.
