Is this Chelsea’s team for the 2012/3 Season?

|

Midfield-
Lampard – Ramires
Mata – Hazard – Marin
The new signings are likely to slot into the first team because of the creativity and freshness they are likely to bring the club in the wide areas as well as in the pocket in between the opposition defence and midfield. Amid rumours of Hulk’s transfer to the club, Marin is likely to lose his potential place in the side if the transfer is completed, with Hulk lining up on the right hand side of a attacking three who will look to feed Torres up front. Hazard and Mata will interchange amongst themselves if they feel that they are not influencing the game enough, with one of them possibly being sacrificed if the club are looking to close a game out, with Mikel being brought on as reinforcement in the middle of the park. As for the support behind this attacking trio, Lampard is likely to line up alongside the combative Ramires, who looked to grow in influence during the closing stages of last season. Lampard will be influential as ever in midfield alongside Ramires, but age may prevent him from starting every game next season, with Meireles the most likely to start when he doesn’t. Kevin De Bruyne is not listed as currently being expected to line up in a Chelsea shirt this season as he is strongly being linked with a loan move away from the club, with Premier League newcomers Southampton recently declaring their interest in the midfielder.

Attack-
Fernando Torres
There will be no surprise as to who Di Matteo will choose to lead the line next season, with Drogba moving abroad to China and the Spaniard looking back to his old self in the national colours of Spain. Knowing that the trust of the manager and the club will be on his shoulders may just allow football fans watch the struggling striker rediscover his best form, knowing that he is the vocal point of the team. He will look to bring other midfielders into play with his ability to keep the ball and run at defenders, as well as latch onto any through balls played by the midfielders behind him using his, once electric, pace. Sturridge, now linked with a move away from the club with AVB of Tottenham interested in making the striker one of his first signings, is likely to be an impact sub for the club, getting a start when Fernando Torres may be injured or in need of a rest. Belgian Romelu Lukaku, much like De Bruyne, is strongly being linked with a loan move away from the club to gain invaluable first team experience, as his chances are likely to be limited at the club this season with Torres, Sturridge and possibly Hulk ahead of him in the pecking order of leading the line for the club next season.

Of course, it is still early days in the transfer market, and I expect a lot of comings and goings for the Premier League clubs, but Chelsea will look to utilize the signings they have already made, only dipping into the transfer market if they feel the need to. They may look to clear space for new arrivals by offloading fringe players such as Essien and Malouda, with the later appearing to look for a move to Brazil, with Vasco leading the chase for the midfielder.
