If John Terry gets proven not guilty can he get the fans back on side?

John Terry is in court today in regards to the alleged racism claim made against him by a member of the public after Chelsea played QPR.  I’ve written about this incident before and I’ll try not to repeat myself. We’ll find out if not today then over the next few days the outcome of this situation and what will happen as a result.  So many people have been quick to judge on this before the court verdict has been given.  I am still of the notion of ‘innocent until proven guilty’

I do not condone racism at all.  I think that racism is still such an outdated opinion.  To make fun of someone in regards to their skin colour is just ridiculous, and shouldn’t still be occurring.  But the hatred for John Terry is ridiculous too.  We should not be judging this situation as we weren’t there.  I’ve played football with both men and women and you always hear things that have been said in the heat of the moment and people just don’t mean it. Nothing can justify the comments that Terry made. That kind of abuse does need to be kicked out of the game.

It’s not acceptable on the football pitch just as it’s not acceptable in all other public (and private) spheres. But can we really make the claim that ‘John Terry is a racist’? I’m not so sure. It’s a tough issue, but to call a man a ‘racist’, is a big call that needs the appropriate evidence.

Anton Ferdinand didn’t report this after the game, so it seems it wasn’t such a big deal to him either and maybe this court case would not have even happened if it wasn’t for the QPR fan reporting it. Obviously if John Terry gets found guilty then yes I do think he should be banned for a few games. Terry is a role model and should be held accountable for his actions. But if he’s not found guilty then I wonder how many people will overturn their opinion of him and leave him alone? He has had to endure abuse himself over the last year and he has also lost his place as England captain twice. Is that punishment enough, or does he now need to be hung out to dry?

Racism is not about making fun of someone who appears to be a different colour… it is having a negative, and prejudicial view of someone because they’re of a different race.

Many people of fair skin, will spend hours, and tons of money in the sun, or dangerously under ultra violet light in attempt to darken their skin… and rarely does one make fun of these individuals in such instances; on the contrary, they are often showered with positive remarks, admiring glares, if not silent envy – and is overwhelmingly viewed as a positive.

It’s a cultural thing – mad dogs and Englishmen, go out…. and all that!

The point I am making is that ‘Race’ is not colour.

Whether JT will be accused of being a racist, is also different from using racist language… if he used racist language, then I suspect that it owes much to his cultural upbringing, then his personal views of people of another race.

Let’s face it, there are many crass comments screamed on or around a football ground that ordinarily would not be shared elsewhere, but this does not in anyway absolve JT from the prospect of being found guilty.

As a longstanding Blue, I just wished he’d admitted using the words in the heat of the moment, instead of, (as he did in the ECL Semi against Barca before foolishly being shown a red card), contrive to create a rather weak explanation for what happened.

Some of his silky sheen is turning to matt emulsion of late.

“if John Terry is proven not guilty can he get the fans back onside?” I think you’ll find true fans abide by the old saying “innocent until proven guilty” and are therefore on his side, anyone who is not on his side, especially based on the very weak evidence available, is not a true fan at all.
