Could Arsenal really hi-jack this £20m long-term Manchester United transfer target?

Since Cesc Fabregas left the club last summer, Arsenal have been crying out for a creative midfielder. Jack Wilshere hasn’t played a game since the Spaniard left. Aaron Ramsey has looked out of sorts. Mikel Arteta is consistent, but doesn’t always deliver the ‘killer ball’. When you’re relying on a defensive midfielder (in this case Alex Song) to provide the team with a creative spark, you know you’re somewhat lacking.

Whilst Song’s over-the-top balls were a highlight of last season, Arsenal surely have to take action over this issue. Though their midfield is pretty crowded, there’s a couple of passengers and a couple of constant injury doubts, so it makes sense for Arsene Wenger to look to bring someone else in. I can’t help but hope that he’s scouring the transfer market for potential targets at this very moment.

Which brings me to this link courtesy of Yahoo Sports: it’s claimed that Arsene Wenger is planning to move for Dutch play-maker Wesley Sneijder once he’s sold Robin Van Persie.

Looks like Arsenal are looking to keep it Dutch. Their captain recently released a statement which made it clear that he wouldn’t be signing a new contract because he wasn’t satisfied with the direction of the club. Wouldn’t it be ironic if his sale funded the exact kind of transfer that he wants to see Arsenal making?

Despite a variety of problems last season, the Inter Milan star remains a marquee name. Yahoo claim he’d cost the Gunners just £20m because he’s not a nailed on part of Andrea Stramaccioni’s system. This seems a little off the mark. The Nerazzurri know what Sneijder offers them and they still value him highly. Yes he’s 28-years-old now, but he’s still got 3-4 years left at the peak of his game. It’s not easy to nail down exactly how much he’d cost.

But after seeing his side finish sixth place in Serie A last season, Sneijder may be ready for a new challenge and as he’s never played in the Premier League, may fancy giving that a go. Whether or not that’ll be with Arsenal is a different matter.

Wesley Sneijder has been heavily linked to Manchester United for the last couple of summers. At one point, his moving to Old Trafford looked like a sure thing. Whilst this talk has cooled down, it’s still difficult to see Sneijder opting to move to the Emirates instead of joining up with Fergie’s title-chasing side.

But what a signing it would be if Arsene can pull it off. He’s the genuine article and he fulfils a role that Arsenal need to look at.

What’s your take? Would Sneijder fit in at the Emirates?
