Reports in the usually unreliable Sunday newspapers this week have been met with surprise, but not total panic perhaps surprisingly so for Pepe Reina has been linked with a move away from Anfield with Lyon’s Hugo Lloris replacing him (Source: The Mirror). Now, any thought of Liverpool’s leader and talisman leaving Anfield would be usually met with the insistence that Liverpool can not do without the Spaniard but with a talented Frenchman linked in the opposite direction the reaction formed may be quite different.
Reina has arguably just completed his worst season in a Liverpool shirt with mistakes beginning to creep into his game. A sense of complacency was starting to be associated with Reina something which had been alien since his arrival. Reina had always exuded confidence and calmness until last season, where one of his most high profile mishaps came against Chelsea in the FA cup final. Of course, it would be churlish to suggest Reina can no longer cut it but his performances last year have definitely giving Liverpool fans food for thought.
The 29 year old has firmly established himself within the hearts of the Anfield faithful after passionate displays combined with the rebuffing of advances from Arsenal during Liverpool’s darkest hour. It would make the procedure of seeing him go more difficult but maybe it’s in their best interests?

The man linked with replacing Reina is Lyon’s Hugo Lloris. The Frenchman in 4 years younger than Reina and has been arguably more successful. Lloris has been an indispensable member of the Lyon team that has continued to impress in France and in Europe. Lloris has all the qualities needed to become a great, joining former legends such as Van Der Sar and Oliver Khan but just needs that final breakthrough.
A move to Liverpool may represent that breakthrough as performances on the grand stage of the English Premier League are sure to catch the eye where ever you may be. Although Lloris has been outstanding at Lyon he may just need that one final push outside of his comfort zone to establish himself as one of the worlds best.
Of course, these are only column fillers on the annual rumour mills but would Liverpool fans really be so opposed to losing Pepe Reina if they knew they were getting Hugo Lloris instead? Lloris is arguably to the same standard, younger and economical. Losing Pepe Reina may not be such a bad thing after all.

Reina is going nowhere. Last season may not have been his best but the injury problems with the defence didn’t help his cause.
