After starting last season like he had a point to prove, the input of Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge seemed to dwindle as the year rolled on. His time out on the wings seemed to sap him of much of his confidence and soon the goals just stopped coming. Before long fans began to wonder whether he had what it takes to make it at a club with ambitions as big as Chelsea’s. Surely the doubters are wrong – from what we’ve seen he’s one of the best young talents England has and when he’s on form he’s a real handful.

He’s got bags of pace, a mean left foot and his time on loan at Bolton proves that he knows where the goal is. At times this season he’s reminded me a little of Arsenal’s Theo Walcott. He makes poor decisions. He doesn’t seem to know when he should pass and when he should shoot. It’s this side of him that has seen Roberto Di Matteo favour others over and above him in a Blue shirt. The player himself has been a little coy over his future. Speaking to Standard Sport he said:

“I have achieved so much with Chelsea this season and I have a great feeling inside. I hope to be able to achieve more things next season.”

This led to further speculation regarding his future. The Daily Star have now reported that Liverpool are ‘plotting’ a £15m move for Sturridge. It’s a move that seems to make a lot of sense.

The Reds looked short up front for the majority of last season. Whilst Luis Suarez’s fleet feet won him many plaudits, his wastefulness in front of goal often cost Liverpool last season. Then there’s Andy Carroll, whose form often waxes and wanes. With Dirk Kuyt already shipped off to Fenerbahce, I think it’s fair to say that Liverpool need a striker.

Liverpool have been chasing the best young British talent for the last couple of seasons now and Sturridge certainly ticks that box.

As for for Sturridge, I’m sure he’s got to the stage whereby he wants to play in his favoured position. He’s served his time out on the wings, but now that he’s 22-years-old, I’m sure he’s ready to start playing on a weekly basis and scoring goals. Liverpool can offer him the opportunity to do just that.

With Chelsea chasing FC Porto’s Hulk, and any number of other strikers, I wouldn’t be surprised if Daniel Sturridge would consider exiting the club this summer. He’s a top player and deserves regular football. So surely Liverpool should give him the exit route he desires?
