Why has the Press covered-up Stewart Regan’s disgraceful Ranger’s attack?

It seems that Stewart Regan, the head of the Scottish Football Association, gets his deflector suits from the same shop as Joe O’Rourke of the Celtic Supporters Club. Just like Joe of the infamous sectarian Titanic slur, Stewart Regan has escaped proper public censure for his complicity in a Twitter threat to Lee McCulloch of Rangers, thanks to a disgraceful cover up by Scotland’s newspapers. Only the Rangers Trust has flagged up Regan’s disgrace and issued a press statement condemning it, and calling for action to be taken against Regan.

Neither of the top two biggest papers in the country, the Daily Record or the Sun, carried the story about Stewart Regan ‘favouriting’ a Tweet which called for Rangers and Scotland star Lee McCulloch to be hanged. Surely this is newsworthy. But the fact that there has been no coverage from the big two papers must leave Rangers fans wondering again if there is an agenda in the Scottish media against the club. It was also left to Lee McCulloch to reveal that Stewart Regan had made a plea for forgiveness in an anxious telephone call to him. “SFA chief makes public apology to Rangers player over Twitter threat.” A good headline – except in Scotland.

It is believed that the content of Stewart Regan’s official Twitter account has been brought to the attention of Strathclyde Police. Will this do any good? Sadly the forces of law and order share the same negativity as the press towards Rangers and are not as vigilant when it comes to protecting Rangers supporters as to prosecuting them. The scales of justice in cyber-land, The Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threating Communications (Scotland) Act 2012, again appear one-sided and it is left to the Rangers supporters groups to take this cover-up to the political level. Scotland’s Scottish National Party First Minister will be contacted to ask what view he takes of Stewart Regan’s tweet.

It is hard to accept the silent approval of Regan’s behaviour from within the headquarters of the SFA, as this is the same organisation that sacked Hugh Dallas, head of referee development after being accused of sending a tasteless e-mail. SFA chief executive Stewart Regan investigated reports of an email sent from Dallas’s SFA account when the Pope visited Scotland. Three other SFA staff members were dismissed, with formal warnings issued to three more. Taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

If recent evidence is anything to go by, then just like Joe O’Rourke, Regan will get a slap on the wrist and warned about his online behaviour. Just don’t expect to read all about it in the Scottish press.
