For me, football is all about the times that leave you speechless. The likes of Michael Owen scoring against Argentina, Ronaldo’s hat-trick against Manchester United for Real Madrid and Sergio Aguero’s injury-time winner against QPR.

These are a few of the wonderful moments that players have produced over the years, and if you are like me, you can pin point where you were when these events happened, whether it be at the pub with mates, at home with your family or even in a quiet corner by yourself.

The European Championships have been just as exciting, throwing up some great games and dramas throughout.

We have seen Cristiano Ronaldo dominate for Portugal with majestic displays against Holland and Greece, Andres Iniesta gliding across the pitch with guile and poise and Andre Pirlo rolling back the years with his range of passing.

Once the International’s come to an end, focus will be back onto the domestic game, and if the Premier League can eclipse last season, then we are in for a treat. There have been some exciting additions and manager changes already which promise to make an even greater spectacle.

And we cannot forget the Football League; the Championship is one of the tightest leagues in the world and boasts some of the most passionate supporters.

A new season brings new optimism, as teams chase that elusive promotion to a higher league and new talent emerges, can the underdog maintain their early season form? Can the underdog do the unthinkable and win the FA Cup? Can the underdog defy all odds and put a run together to stay in the Premier League?

This is why football means everything to people, tears will be shed, and disappointment will ensue, but that chance of glory and witnessing something special is why we cannot turn our backs on the sport.

Because it matters.
