Would this hotly-tipped star be a good signing for Liverpool?

|

When Brendan Rodgers was confirmed as Liverpool manager he told the press that there was an agreement with Swansea that he would no sign any of their players for 12 months. However Gylfi Sigurdsson is not yet under contract at Swansea City. After an impressive loan spell there for the second half of the season, Swansea had agreed a fee with Sigurdsson’s parent club Hoffenheim. However personal terms and a medical have yet to be confirmed and with Brendan Rodgers saying he would be interested if the player came onto the market, I ask would he be a good fit for Liverpool?

Liverpool’s problem throughout last season was a distinct lack of goals, especially from the midfield. All top teams need their midfielders to chip in with a certain amount of goals to ease the burden on the strikers. Sigurdsson would certainly help Liverpool out in that respect after scoring 7 goals in his 18 appearances of Swansea and is always looking to break into the box to create and score goals.

The American owners of Liverpool Fenway Sports Group are keen to sign young talent with eventual sell on profit in the future. Sigurdsson would only cost around 6.8 million pounds which would interest the owners after splashing out lots of money on players like Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson last summer. He is also at the tender age of 22 meaning he has lots of time to improve and could be at the club for many years. He is the type of player which would excite the Liverpool crowd because of the level of flair he possess, in recent years some of Liverpool’s midfielders have been labelled more functional than exciting and Sigurdsson would definitely  fall into the exciting category.

If this transfer was to happen it would probably mean that one of Joe Cole or Alberto Aquilani’s Liverpool career would be most certainly over, after both returned form loan spells. Brendan Rodgers will give both a chance to show him what they can do, but if he were to sign Sigurdsson as another attacking midfielder it’s hard to imagine both of them surviving.

It’s worth to note that Brendan Rodgers is not trying to annoy Swansea fans he’s doing anything but after publicly telling Sigurdsson to finalise his move to the Welsh team however the Iceland international Sigurdsson may have in the back of his mind that if he rejects the Swans  that he could get himself a move to one of the traditional big boys of the English game.

    No, he’s not good enough

    • Afc says:

How do you know he’s not good enough , I’m sure in your average Liverpool side he will prob be one if your best players!! Didn’t Swansea beat you last game of the season?? Yeah I think they did!!

  • Hewson says:

I should not like to see him replace Aquilani. If he comes I would make it in place of Cole (if it is a case of either/or).

  • Dennis says:

The owners need to give Brendan Rodgers £70M this summer to spend on six/6 players:

1: B Matuidi Or Momo Sissoko Of PSG, J Allen Of Swansea, N De Jong Of Man City Or C Tiote Of Newcastle, One of these players should be brought for £7-£16M to compete with LUCAS. DM

2: A Cissokho Of Lyon should be brought to club for £3-£8M to compete with Enrique. LB

3: J Hoillet Of Blackburn, M Susaeta Of A Bilbao, J Biabiany Of Sampdoria, Afellay Of Barcelona or P Hernandez Of Valencia, One of these fast pacey right wingers should be brought for £6-£14M to play on the right wing. RW

4: Coutinho Of Inter Milan, Diego Of Werder Bremen Or Sigurdsson Of Hoffenheim, One of these class, quality attacking midfielders should be brought to club for £7-£12M AM

5: A Johnson Of Man City, C Nzogbia Of A Villa Or D Capel Of Sporting Clube De Portugal , One of these pacey, quick left footed left wingers should be brought for £6-£15M to compete with Downing. LW

6:G Agbonglahor Of A Villa should be brought for £6-£12M to compete with Bellamy, Carroll and Suarez for Forward positions or for the loan striker role. FD

These 6 players would help club get back into champions league this upcoming season, these 6 players would bring mobility, pace, speed to squad that we have lacked for last 4 seasons.

Diego is at athletico Madrid u twat

      • Dennis says:

Before you start calling names joker, know your facts about football. Diego is owned by wolfsburg and is a wolfsburg player, he was loaned out last season you comedian.

So before you start trying to be a big man and calling names, know what your talking about 1st and foremost.

Interesting list. I fear Matuidi or Sissoko will be out of our reach even if PSG should decide to sell them, Allen is not an option due to the agreement between Rodgers and Swansea, I can’t see de Jong in red and Tiote will go for CL football if he moves. As such I believe Spearo will get another season to prove himself as a DM. LB is not a priority given that we have Johnson who can play there and young Robinson coming through. Johnson of Man City plays mainly on the right wing and he would be a realistic, and good, target for a position which is clearly a priority. Downing and Bellars to compete on the LW with Sterling getting more first team experiences. I think we’ll go for Sigurdsson as an attacking mid as he knows the style and play of Rodgers and Luuk de Jong for the striker position. So in short Adam Johnson, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Luuk de Jong for a combined fee of 30m.

      • Dennis says:

Matuidi Or Sissoko are not out of reach if our club got for them, both are two hard strong tough dominative defensive midfielders, either one of them would offer good competition for Lucas and also quality cover if he is injured. So one of them should be brought to club for £6-£12M. Spearing is a championship player and he looked gd at leceister two seasons ago. But he would struggle to get into leceisters centre midfield now with Danns and Wellens as the main two. DM

We need another left back in to compete with Enrique as he became complacent half way through season and struggled to reproduce his great form he had at start of season. And we have been linked with A Cissokho for three seasons now, i am sure its about time we just signed him for £3-£9M to compete with Enrique for left back position. LB

Johnson and Kelly are both competing for the right back position and thats only position at club, that is well covered in terms of quality. But both players seem to be injury prone and have quite a bit of time during the season on the treatment table.

The two right wingers i would bring to our club this summer are: J Hoillet Of Blackburn and M Phillips Of Blackpool, If club went all out we could bring J hoillet on free transfer or up to £3M from Blackburn. And M Phillips we could do a straight swap him for C Adams. Both wingers would bring youth, pace, speed, width, class, creativity, quality delivery and goals from the right wing. RW’S

The left winger i would bring to club would be either be C Nzogbia Of A Villa Or A Johnson Of Man City for £6-£12M. But i have feeling Man City will not want to let Johnson go and may want to keep him as a squad player. Nzogbia has more pace, speed than Johnson but both have skill, tricks and goals in them. And either one of them being brought to club this summer, if they were fully fit and injury free they would make Downing a bench warmer. LW

The attacking midfielder role Sigurdsson looks like he will be brought this summer, but coutinho Of Inter Milan and Diego Of Wolfsburg are both brazilian stars who have that knack and class about them to open up teams and the top teams at any given time. So one of these three players should be brought to club for £6-£12m AM

Lastly: G Agbonglahor is 25, English forward, has pace, speed to burn and is powerful and strong and at right club he can get back into england contention as he has all the attributes needed to become an international star, If the club could get him to club for £5-£10M. And he is given chance to shine and can challenge, compete with Bellamy, Carroll and Suarez for the forward positions at club. Agbonglahor will only get better surrounded by better players and a better club. And he would not be a flop, he knows the premiership. He can play as the loan striker or in a partnership, he terrorises defenders playing for Villa. If B Rodgers brings his free flowing passing and moving and counter attacking football to the club over the next years, G Agbonglahor would flourish in a team like that his pace and speed suits teams who play that way.

@Flavio, i have read loads of comments but yours seem the most credible way of thinking that brendan may use.

  • chris says:

The figue of 70m in my opinion is not enough.
Lets look at Man City expenditure to get them into the top 4,over a three year period they spent over 340m and look at chelsea last year and this year. To progress we need to be spending over 100m this year on quality not quntaty. We just need two world class players this year and the next to acheve this and some bargins if avalible.
If we are short on money I would go for Jordan Rhodes, plus falcao and I would consider taking Michael owen on some thing like a pay as you play or fitt. We now what we get with a fitt Owen Goals

  • Vialli says:

Spearing another chance next season…. God no !!

He is awful, our worst player by a mile !!!

    Buy Diame – Free, Siguardsson £7mil, Blazychowski (spelling) £10.5mil, Zaha £6mil, A.Johnson £8.5mil and Anelka – Free

If we can have a marquee signing, make it Cristian Erikson £15mil

    All for under £50mil

Use some youth players and more time for Shelvey, Hendo in their favoured positions and give another chance to Downing
