Are Paris Saint-Germain now a force to be reckoned with?

|

In the past decade, one of the most prestigious sides in France, Paris Saint-Germain, had recently slipped off the radar, fallen down the pecking order in terms of recent success.

Once the most decorated side on French soil, PSG, had to relinquish their reign as superiors, until last summer.

Due to a change in ownership, Qatar Investment Society were now the sole shareholder of the Ligue 1 side, following a substantial increase in resources, it was surely just a matter of time until the rest of Europe would recognize the legitimate threat they pose.

Midway through their first season under new ownership, former Chelsea manager, Carlo Ancelotti was appointed first team coach with former Real Madrid & Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele as his assistant. Unfortunately for the Italian, PSG found themselves finishing second behind rank outsiders Montpellier. However, all was not lost for the French outfit, as a return to the European stage subsequently followed their 2nd place finish.

In their obtaining of a Champions League spot, it will also give the side an opportunity to showcase their array of talent, the likes of Kevin Gamiero & Jeremy Menez have both been included in the French squad participating in the Euro’s as we speak and are both spoke highly of by French reporters.

Paris Saint-Germain already possesses the creative influence of Javier Pastore, a player who, before his move to France, was much sought after across the top teams in England. But on the contrary to comments he made about a potential move to Chelsea, he became the first big money signing of the PSG revolution.

The French side has already expressed their intentions in this transfer window by agreeing a fee with Italian side, Napoli, for the Argentinian forward Ezequiel Lavezzi. But they haven’t stopped there, with several players being linked with a move, not least the highly rated centre back, Thiago Silva. The Brazilian has attracted attention from across the continent, primarily for his solidity and tenacity at the heart of defence.

A proposed €77 million offer was devised for both Thiago Silva & Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but AC Milan deemed that an insult to the Italian side and in turn, rejected that astonishing offer.

You get an inkling that this is just the start of Paris Saint-Germain’s rebuilding process, when the owners took over the club they underlined the willingness to ‘do what it takes’ to secure the Champions League. If the club’s ambitions in this transfer market are any indication, then it won’t be long until they cement their status amongst Europe’s elite in the longevity.

We are of course already acquainted with teams’ spending sprees in England; the likes of Chelsea & Manchester City have already displayed just how phenomenal a side can become with a substantial amount of resources and their success might just be replicated by Paris Saint-Germain, creating yet another fearsome adversary.

With a money induced side, there are no bounds to the heights this French side can reach and with Ancelotti at the helm of proceedings and the funds he has at his disposal it’s inevitable that PSG will achieve success.
