All the plaudits go to Martinez and his team for rising to the challenge and securing their Premiership status for another season. However, the question has to be asked as to how the team can put in such performances as those that helped them to safety in the latter part of the season, more consistently next season?

Skipper Gary Caldwell has been fantastic throughout Wigan’s relegation battle, adding steel and experience to his defence. The team has stuck together, no doubt through his and his managers’ leadership and the Latics’ fans will be keen for this ‘unity’ to continue into next year.

The so called ‘bigger teams’ will be monitoring Victor Moses closely, so Martinez will be keen to ensure that Moses stays at the DW for next season, with his pace, power, skilful feet and eye for goal.

As with most teams in the League, Wigan will look to strengthen in all areas. Martinez will look to bring in some steel to consolidate Wigan’s fighting spirit and make them hard to beat, as well as trying to blend that with some added quality, a player who will create a bit of magic that will win Wigan a tough game when they aren’t playing well, much like Victor Moses has done for his team on occasions this season.

Looking at the teams that have not been lucky enough to avoid the relegation trap door, which players would be good additions to Wigan’s squad?

My thoughts immediately turn to the Scott Dann and Roger Johnson defensive partnership at Birmingham only a few seasons ago which impressed many. These two players when in form would add much welcomed competition in central defence and the pair as stated already have Premier League experience.
