Why Grant Holt should gave gone:

|

The England squad has been announced and Roy has decided to only take four strikers. Grant Holt must be gutted as I really thought he’d of made the squad.

Although Holt is 31 and not getting any younger I feel his performances this season have been incredible and a return of 15 premier league goals speaks volumes. Especially when many fans across the country said he could do it in league 1 and the championship but wrote off the Carlisle born striker in the premier league.

Wayne Rooney is going to be the first choice once his suspension is served and I’d imagine that Roy will play 5 midfielders and base the play around Rooney but until then the other strikers in the reckoning are Carroll, Welbeck and Defoe.

Introducing the neat little app that’ll pay you to view content tailored to your interests:

Andy Carroll’s performances recently have picked up and he’s slowly becoming the player we saw at Newcastle United but his goal record in the premier league this season is dreadful. 4 league goals in 35 appearances doesn’t exactly frighten defences. Danny Welbeck has had a great season don’t get me wrong but again 9 league goals in 30 appearances isn’t going to compare to the strikers of Spain, Germany, Holland and France.

An in-form Jermaine Defoe can frighten any defence but his lack of game time at Tottenham has to make him purely a sub for Roy to use. His 11 league goals in only 25 appearances isn’t shabby but I feel he will only be used as rotation.

Grant Holt had to be in the squad personally I feel he offers more than Welbeck so I’d take Rooney, Defoe, Carroll and Holt. I know he’s 31 and isn’t a young striker but for form apart from Rooney he’s our most prolific Englishman in the premier league.
