Manchester City’s victory the first of many to come?

Manchester City win the title after 44 years of waiting. During that time they’ve been at both extremes of the league, but today was to be their greatest victory yet. After last years FA Cup win over Stoke, it was clear City were going to finish in the top quarter of the league, and when an early win streak raised hope among the fans, a draw at Fulham put them slightly behind the forerunners.

Another win streak of 7 victories including a 6-1 win over rivals Manchester United saw City go top of the league. They remained there for 20 consecutive games, keeping the distance between themselves and United at fingertips. Then came a streak of mixed wins and losses, United regained the League and put 8 points between them. But that was not to be the end. City pushed forwards and won 6 consecutive games, including this afternoon’s 3-2 narrow victory over QPR, giving them the Barclays Premier League title on a goal difference of 8, and a points difference of 0.

Questions have flown round about various issues of todays make or break game. Did Tevez throw the first punch? How many of those corners were really goal kicks? But the fact remains the same, it nearly slipped their grasp. Had it not been for Edin Džeko and Sergio Agüero scoring two superb goals in the 92nd and 94th minute of the game, the league would have been in United’s cabinet for the 20th time.

This season, City have been plagued by speculation, suspension and stupidity. Kolo Touré was suspended after failing a drugs test, Carlos Tevez was stupid and therefore suspended by manager Roberto Manchini after refusing to practice and play, and finally, the speculation that City bought the league title. It’s true that City have spent an obscene amount of money creating a football team of international giants, but also buying players with talent and showing them to the world, my example being Sergio Agüero.

So, although the controversy may have clouded City’s fantastic season at times, I’m still glad to say that they are this seasons champions, it was a deserved victory.  28 victories, 5 ties, 5 defeats, scoring 93 goals, conceding 29, and winning the Premier League. I’m sure it’s the first of many to come.
