Having come out of a seemingly never ending tunnel of pure darkness Arsenal are now on the verge of securing Champions League football, the utter of such suggestion after their 8-2 mauling at the hands of Manchester United would have seen merciless mocking.  Many players have stood up in recent months such as Tomas Rosicky and surprisingly Yossi Benayoun but as everyone knows it has been their player of the year Robin Van Persie who has carried them almost single handily throughout the season.  Depressingly for Arsenal fans it appears they will be missing their talisman next year as he seeks pastures new, so where can Arsenal turn to in order to replicate the goals their Dutchman has brought them?

It’s been said Lukas Podolski is on his way to the Emirates having apparently signed an agreement with Arsene Wenger’s troops worth around 10 million pounds.  It feels as though Podolski has been around forever, he starred at the world cup in 2006 but even then it felt as though he wasn’t new to the scene despite him being just 20 at the time.  Podolski has a good goal scoring record at this club FC Koln without truly uprooting many roots with 32 goals in 85 appearances.  If anything it’s been Podolski’s international which has caught the eye with almost a goal every two games.  So Podolski ticks most boxes but perhaps Arsenal should look elsewhere this summer despite an agreement having apparently been reached.

Mario Gomez, not Balotelli, is arguably one of the hottest forwards on the European stage currently and would prove to be a statement of true ambition should Wenger be able to pull of such a coup.  Gomez has in the past been linked with the likes of Liverpool and it is no surprise to see why as his goal scoring record in Germany is quite spectacular.  He has 63 goals in 92 appearances for Bayern Munich and has been nothing short of prolific during his time there.  The German international has everything the modern footballer requires; turn of pace, strength and calm finishing when presented with chances.  These qualities were displayed recently as his side progressed to the Champions League final after an enterprising performance at Real Madrid.

Gomez is likely to be linked with many clubs over the upcoming summer but wouldn’t provide a necessarily cheap option.  However, you are paying for quality and Gomez will guarantee you 20 goals a season at least – just what arsenal need should Van Persie depart – so will Arsenal make their move?  It remains to be seen, they may well have a deal in place for Podolski to join them but maybe Wenger should take a moment or two to consider this hulking German.
