Should Manchester United pounce for Bayern Munich’s disgruntled main man?

Recent reports suggest that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is eying up a move for Bayern Munich’s wing wizard Arjen Robben. But is he a player that can add something to this United side or should they look elsewhere?

At 28-years-old, Robben is enjoying the peak years of his career. Many English football fans will remember his time with Chelsea, where his close control, remarkable pace and dribbling skills helped him stand out in a very strong side. They may also remember him scoring against England in a recent friendly. What he really deserves credit for, however is his time in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich.

Thanks to the signings of Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka his Real Madrid career was doomed to fail and he ended up ‘forced’ out of the club in a €25m move. Whether he knew it or not, joining Bayern Munich was the best possible move for his career. Regular football with a quality side saw him kick up his own game another gear. He won Footballer of the Year in Germany for the year 2010 and helped his side onwards to success.

Who can forget his stunning volley against Manchester United that ended up kicking the Red Devils out of the Champions League back in 2010? There’s no doubting his quality. What’s more, he has managed to score an impressive 51 goals in 80 matches, which is more or less unheard of for a wide player. He’s one of the most technically astute, inventive and dynamic midfielders in world football. He’s also versatile and can play behind the striker, or as a winger on either side.

In short he’d make a fantastic signing for a club like Manchester United who are looking for a little more craft in their midfield.

German tabloid TZ recently reported that Arjen Robben is ready to quit the Allianz Arena after a fall out with boss Jupp Heynckes. The Dutchman has stalled on contract talks as he waits to see whether Bayern Munich can overcome a six point deficit to beat Borussia Dortmind to the Bundesliga title.

This fall out will make it difficult for Robben to sign a new contract. As such, it’s unsurprising that other clubs have begun to follow the situation with interest. TZ report that Manchester United are leading the way and are willing to make a summer move for the Dutch International. If he’s ready to leave he’d make an impressive acquisition for any club. Having Antonio Valencia and Arjen Robben play down the wings, with Ashley Young and Nani in reserve would provide Sir Alex Ferguson with plenty of attacking endeavour.

Of course, he’d cost a pretty penny, but if Manchester United’s interest is true, I doubt many fans would complain if Sir Alex Ferguson made a big money move for the unhappy Bayern Munich star.

What’s your take? Is Arjen Robben the right man for the job at Manchester United or should they look elsewhere?

Arjen Robben is an awesome player. If I had to name a world eleven, he would be in it. Sign him Fergie.
