Could this blow be a blessing in disguise for relegation threatened Wolves?

|

In a season that can only be describes as a travesty, Wolves have been hit by another huge blow to keeper Wayne Hennessey.

The Welsh International who had hopes of making the Great Britain Olympic team has ruptured his anterior cruciate knee ligament which may rule him out for up to six months. The injury was suffered at The Stadium of Light last Saturday but the keeper played the 90 minutes and didn’t realise the severity of the injury until the end of the game.

Although Wayne has had to pick the ball out of his net 73 times this season he has arguably been Wolves’ most consistent performer this season. He has made the most saves out of any keeper in the Premier League with a save to shot percentage of 69%.

A host of Premier League clubs have been tracking the Welshman for a few years now and at the age of 25 he has plenty of time to blossom into a decent Premier League stopper.

As Wolves are as good as relegated this may not be as bad as it first looks. I know it’s not a nice way to look at a terrible injury but from a selfish point of view I can’t see a team moving for an injured player over the summer. Once he has recovered he is going to need time to get back to the level he is at now and can’t see a transfer for a Premier League side viable. Wolves have ex Swansea keeper Dorus De Vries who passed a club record with an impressive 25 clean sheets in a single season at Swansea.

Having proved his worth in the Championship Wolves have a keeper who will be able to cope at that level and Hennessey’s injury may keep him at the club longer than most pessimistic fans expected.
