As if a 5-2 thrashing of their arch rivals Tottenham wasn’t enough, gluttonous Arsenal fans have been delivered yet more good news. According to reputable German paper Bild, Lukas Podolski has agreed personal terms for a move to the Emirates in the summer. Whilst some have chosen to play down the significance of this, I can’t help but feel that it’s a good sign to see the club looking forward.

That is, of course if there’s any truth to these claims. Bild suggests that although personal terms have been agreed, an agreement has yet to be formed between the two clubs. Now that strikes me as a bit odd. How have Arsenal managed to start discussions with the German International before negotiating terms with FC Koln?

Arsenal fans will surely be hoping that they do end up signing Podolski in the summer, having missed out on him in January. The Gunners have been desperately short of firepower upfront and have been forced to rely on solely Robin Van Persie. Whilst the Dutch ace has produced the goods, Arsene Wenger can’t rely on anybody else to step up should he get injured or should he need a rest.

Marouane Chamakh has the confidence levels of a cornered mouse, whilst Park Chu-Young doesn’t seem to be trusted to do anything else other than sell shirts. Beyond this, there’s Niklas Bendtner whose colourful boots haven’t exactly lit up the Stadium of Light during his time on loan with Sunderland and who looks likely to be shipped out permanently this summer.

It has now become essential that Arsene Wenger seeks to redress the balance in the transfer market. The Gunners will need to bring in 1 or 2 top quality strikers this summer if they’re to stand any chance next season.

Given that Podolski is one of the best strikers currently on the market, it makes sense for Arsenal to try and get business done early, before other clubs come along and start a bidding war. That’s the mistake the Gunners made last summer – by shipping out their two best players late on in the window they left no time to bring in suitable replacements.

Making inroads for Podolski now shows that the club is being proactive and that’s something to celebrate after a couple of seasons of Arsenal sitting on its hands and projecting an aura of complacency.

Whilst wrapping up an early deal for Podolski will have no influence on how this season plays out, its importance will be realised early on in the summer. It shows that Arsenal are still a forward thinking club capable of attracting the best players and may well be the deciding factor in players like Theo Walcott and Robin Van Persie signing new contracts.
