Should Scholes go to Euro 2012?

Whilst he’s not getting any younger, Paul Scholes can still strike a claim for being one of the best English midfielders in the country. Could anybody honestly argue that he’s not better than the likes of Frank Lampard and Gareth Barry?

Yes both players are younger and can probably run for longer than the Ginger Prince (although I’d love to see Scholesy take on Frank in a fitness test) but neither of them can offer the same cut and thrust as the Manchester United mainstay. Why Gareth Barry continues to be deployed at International level is beyond me. He’s too slow and cumbersome to cut it with the big boys and although he has a decent range of passing, he doesn’t put this to good use at International level. Why does Carrick continue to get overlooked, whilst Barry’s still getting opportunities?

Frank Lampard isn’t even getting a look in for Chelsea, so it doesn’t make sense for him to be selected as a first teamer for England.

But with Scholes’ involvement England can still form a strong midfield. With Scott Parker deployed in front of the back four and Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes pushed a little further forward, the Three Lions should have plenty of attacking endeavour as well as some competitive bite. With these three in tow, I can’t really see any other sides bullying England’s midfield.

Of course, it’s up to Paul Scholes to decide whether he wants another crack at the International team. He retired because he was unprepared to be a squad player and wanted to focus on his Manchester United playing career. England managers of the time never really knew how to get the best out of Scholes and always seemed to favour others. But if a team were built around him, things could be different.

If he received the backing of the new England manager – whoever that may be – would he be willing to help his National side this summer? A lot may depend on whether he fancies another season in the Premier League. If he’s prepared to stay on for another term, I doubt he’d be willing to forgo the summer break in place of more football.

If his Premier League career is to end this summer however, he may fancy one final swansong.

To sum up then: Should Scholes go to Euro 2012? Yes. Will he? Who knows?

Interesting piece, but ‘Frank Lampard isn’t even getting a look in for Chelsea’ is unfortunately completely wrong as he’s Chelsea’s 4th most used player and most used midfielder. 33 appearances this season is the opposite of not ‘getting a look in’.
