Should Arsenal & Liverpool really consider spending £15m on this midfielder?

Fulham’s Moussa Demebele is one of the major reasons behind his club’s success this season. The Belgium International tends to operate as the furthest man forward in Fulham’s midfield where he’s capable of launching attacks and generally pulling the Cottagers forward.

He has been instrumental for Fulham this season and fans will be disappointed that the club has been unable to extend his contract. As things stand however, by the time the transfer window reopens Dembele will have only a year left on his contract and Martin Jol may well choose to cut his losses if the right offer comes in.

Given the circumstances, he’d be available at a fair price and as such there are sure to be plenty of interested suitors. Goal claim that Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham are the three main clubs monitoring Dembele’s situation at Craven Cottage and that a bidding war could erupt in the summer. Unfortunately for Fulham they simply can’t offer the same kind of wages that Europe’s top clubs can and this must surely have figured into Dembele’s decision not to sign a new contract.

But there’s a problem: Goal also claim that Dembele is rated at £15m by Fulham and I can’t see any of the three aforementioned clubs chasing a player who is still untested at the very top level and who is entering the final year of his contract, at this kind of price.

Whilst he has been impressive this season and has thrived in the attacking midfield role that Martin Jol has assigned to him, it’s not entirely clear that he has what it takes to perform at the top of the table. One thing’s for sure – he doesn’t get on the score sheet enough, with only 6 goals in his last 62 Fulham appearances.

That for me rules him out of a move to Arsenal. The Gunner’s midfield is already pretty packed and I doubt Wenger will fancy a move for a player without any end product. Liverpool are also looking for players who can provide them with goals, so I doubt they’ll be too interested in Dembele. As for Tottenham, they too have a crowded midfield so it’s difficult to see where he’d fit in. Could he realistically displace Scott Parker or Sandro? I doubt it.

As such, Fulham could find themselves in trouble if they don’t drop their asking price. They run the risk of not selling him this summer and then losing him on a free next year. The sensible thing to do would be to evaluate him fairly, take what you can and reinvest it. We’ll just have to see if sense prevails this summer.
