Are Wigan and QPR now Premier League relegation favourites?

|

Wolves’ game against Blackburn at Molineux simply proved that a change of manager doesn’t always improve a team’s morale and that if you stick with your man, you may well be rewarded. That seemed to the case on both benches in Blackburn’s 2-0 win over Wolves. Rovers looked the more confident and assured of both relegation candidates and in Junior Hoilett they have a real gem of a player; he scored both goals to earn Steve Kean’s men a vital win.

With players of the likes of Canadian star Hoilett and goal grabber Yakubu, you feel that Rovers might just have enough to get themselves over the threshold. This was their second win in three games against teams around them following their 3-2 win against QPR a few weeks back. As for Terry Connor’s Wolves – they bear the look of a deflated side and despite coming from behind in Connor’s first game in charge against Newcastle to earn a credible 2-2 draw; they have since fallen away and suffered damaging defeats against Fulham (5-0) and now Blackburn. They’ve lost five home games in a row and their time may well be up. In hindsight, Mick McCarthy’s sacking may have been a huge mistake.

We finally move on to Wigan Athletic; Roberto Martinez’s never-say-die Latics who refuse to give up on their seven-year Premier League stint. There aren’t a lot of goals in the team (three players share four goals as top scorer) and their home form is the worst in the top flight but at the weekend against Norwich they proved that they won’t go without a fight. Victor Moses’ second half finish cancelled out Wes Hoolahan’s opener at Carrow Road to earn a 1-1 draw for Martinez’s men. Indeed, it was a game they should have won as they enjoyed the majority of the chances throughout; Mohamed Diame missing two golden opportunities at the end. Sadly, it seems that they may have given themselves too much to do, which a real shame as, on their day, Martinez’s men play some lovely stuff. Their lack of goalscorer has massively hindered their season and their time could be up.

So, there you go – I’ll state that the bottom three will remain as they are and Bolton and Blackburn, with their experience of being there before, will just stave off the big R for one more season. Who do you think is due for the drop?
