What’s the logic behind Spurs’ recent signing?

When it comes to the transfer market, Harry Redknapp’s work is never quite done – at least that’s how it seems. Harry’s propensity for getting it right more often than not, when he signs a player is a major contributing factor to Tottenham’s current success and the fans will be hoping that he continues this winning streak without putting too large a dent in the club’s finances.

Which brings me to the recent news that Tottenham have completed the signing of 20-year-old Brazilian defender Bruno Uvini on a three-and-a-half month loan deal from Sao Paulo. The deal also includes an option to seal a permanent switch worth 3.7m euros in the summer.

Whilst the words ‘Brazilian’ and ‘defender’ don’t really gel together, you can be sure that Tottenham’s scouting team have done their job and picked up a player with potential.

At just 20-years-old, he’s clearly one for the future, but I have to wonder – is this really an area where Tottenham need reinforcements?

Yet a look at some of his comments illuminates the logic in Tottenham’s decision to sign him now. Speaking to Sao Paulo’s official website about the move, he said:

“It’s a great opportunity that came by, I couldn’t let it pass. I have been in talks with Tottenham for a while, it’s a great club, with worldwide visibility. They asked me to come right away.”

“I’ll be there for three months during which time I’ll try to adapt to English football and to the culture. I think I’m going to evolve, both professionally and personally by doing this choice, [Tottenham] have this squad renewing project so they asked me to join the team so that I will be fit to make my way in the next season.”

It looks like this is a ‘non-playing loan’ and that’s why Spurs have been permitted to make a signing outside of the transfer-window system. The emphasis is clearly on preparing him to play next season and giving him the opportunity to impress and earn his way to a permanent contract. In that respect, it’s a bit of a win-win. Either he’s deemed unworthy and Spurs lose very little, or he’s deemed worthy and Tottenham get their hands on a decent player.

There’s no harm looking to the future. In two years time players like Ledley King and William Gallas will need replacing. Whilst the likes of Younes Kaboul, Michael Dawson and Caulker are likely here for the long-run, it doesn’t hurt to add another body to the mix and who’s to say that Bruno Uvini isn’t the right man for the job?
