Fraizer Who?

|

Has Pearce lost his mind? Well judging by the England squad named for the friendly with Holland you would think so. Within the 25 man squad he has named Fraizer Campbell amongst the four other strikers. Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck and Bent were all expected but along with a lot of fans I thought that fifth choice would surely be Carroll’s after his recent performances.

Don’t get me wrong Campbell isn’t a bad player but surely not international standard. This is a player who has scored twice all season and scored once in the league. He has only made 5 appearances for the Black cats this entire season. The lad has been plagued with injuries and has overcome two career threatening injuries but an England call up is a step too far.

Campbell has enjoyed successful loan spells with Antwerp and Hull but his Premier league goal record of 5 goals in 38 league games doesn’t exactly spell danger. You have to think that Pearce is thinking to the future and could hardly call the rest of the squad shock selections so what must Andy Carroll be thinking. Carroll has started to find form in recent weeks and I think it will only be a matter of time before Kenny Dalglish has his frontman scoring goals.

So, is Fraizer Campbell going to be called up for a one appearance cameo like the loveable David Nugent or is he there for the Euro’s you decide. I for one would much rather see the Geordie up top for England as he’s starting to look the player he was at Newcastle.

He is quick and intelligent. Also, he has versatility. His career was split by 2 nasty knee injuries. Perhaps too early a call up, but, it is only a friendly. Like Bent he has an eye for goal. If he gets a run in the team he will score goals. Carroll is surely in Stuart Pierce’s thinking. I say give Stuart Pierce a chance and leave him to it.

True, it is only a friendly but I only really want to see players who are going to the euros and can’t see Campbell being with the squad so a pointless call up really.
