Yago Falque hasn’t been at Tottenham long having joined the club from Juventus in the summer, but is already being sent out on loan. Southampton have secured the services of Falque on loan until the end of the season in a move that could prove to be remarkably astute for both clubs.

Tottenham pulled off the signing of Falque with little fanfare (the move was only completed recently) and the news appears to have slipped somewhat under the radar. It’s almost as though he’s being viewed as Spurs’ secret weapon.

Yago may have six games under his belt at Tottenham (not bad for a 21-year-old) but is sure to get more opportunities with the Saints. He’s clearly well thought of amongst the Spurs hierarchy and it’s for this reason that he’s been presented with this opportunity. Let’s hope that he makes the most of it, for Tottenham and Southampton’s sake.

He’ll be a part of an impressive Championship leading side full of versatile, energetic players and to that extent I’m sure he’ll fit right in. Saints manager Nigel Adkins was understandably pleased as punch with his new addition:

“He’s a very exciting player and I’m pleased that we’ve got him on board and I think the supporters will be excited by what he can do on the pitch.

“Like many of our players he’s a player who can play everywhere and he’s someone who can play on the left, on the right and in the number 10 position behind the striker, so he’s a talented footballer and one who I’m sure is going to excite everybody.

“They [Tottenham] rate him highly and have loaned him out to ourselves where he will become another addition to the players that we’ve got to give us that opportunity to get back into the Premier League.”

It’s a smart signing on the Saints behalf because he’ll suit Southampton’s style of play (a style of play that isn’t all too different from Tottenham’s) perfectly. Falque is skilful, driven and forward thinking. Competition for places may have been too much for the young Spaniard at Tottenham, but there will be opportunities for him to prove his worth at Southampton.

Falque himself seems keen to impress: “I’m very happy to be here at Southampton, and I am looking forward to training with my new teammates who have proved this season that they are very talented. I hope that I can help the team to great things this season.”

He may be saying all the right things but it’s on the pitch that we’ll learn whether or not he’s got the chutzpah to make it at a club like Tottenham. For both Spurs and the Saints, let’s hope he’s a revelation.
