With Liverpool yet to take real action in what has to be one of the least memorable transfer windows of recent memory, fan speculation continues to mount as to whether Kenny Dalglish and FSG will pull off a last minute signing. Whilst those associated with the club will be riding the tide of good feeling brought about by seeing off Manchester City and progressing to the final of the Carling Cup, it’s clear that there’s still a lot of work to be done if Liverpool are to compete at the very top of the Premier League.

My feeling is that the Reds need a special signing, a Luis Suarez figure to come in and boost this squad. Unless you’re extremely lucky, or have an outstanding team of scouts, this kind of signing is likely to set your club back a fair amount and it’s unclear whether FSG would be willing to front up more cash. As things stand they just haven’t seen enough return on their big money signings like Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing and may prefer to stick rather than twist in the transfer market.

Which brings me to the latest rumour concerning the Reds: according to FootyBunker. Liverpool are set to stun the footballing world by pulling off the audacious signing of Napoli’s Edinson Cavani.

Cavani is one of world football’s most premier talents. At just 23-years-old the Uruguayan has chalked up an impressive 51 goals in 72 games in Serie A.

When it comes to world-class strikers outside the Premier League, he’s surely the best Europe has to offer. He’s continued to impress this season, racking up 17 goals along the way whilst courting the interests of a number of top Premier League clubs. Both Chelsea and Manchester City have been linked to the 23-year-old in the past  without making any concrete bids.

This has left the door open for Liverpool to squeeze in at the last moment. Whilst FSG may be wary of bankrolling such a move, it could be the marquee signing  that Liverpool need. A significant burst of inspiration that could drag the Reds over the finishing line. There’s no more mouthwatering a prospect than that of seeing Cavani line up with Suarez in a all-South-American Liverpool front line.

What’s more, even if he were to cost Liverpool £35-40m, he’d still represent value for money when it comes to goals-per-pound. Manchester City proved that by spending money on a proven goal-scorer like Sergio Aguero, a team can find success. In that respect, signing Cavani could make a real statement to the footballing world: Liverpool mean business.

If you think Cavani would even entertain the idea of moving to Scallyville, let alone trotting out at that rundown stadium, you’re more deluded than the rest of football think you are! No money, no Champions league football, no other decent players in the team….. YEAH, course he’d come sign!!
