Is this the better of Arsenal’s two key January transfer targets?

It doesn’t seem long ago now that Arsenal fans were collectively drooling over the prospect of Eden Hazard joining the club. As early as last summer, Arsenal fans made their wishes clear through Twitter, forums, blogs and various other mediums: ‘We want Eden Hazard’.

Since then, however, people appear to have changed their tunes.

Attention has turned instead to Borussia Dortmund’s Mario Goetze, who has been gathering a great deal of plaudits over the past few months. That’s not to say that Arsenal fans would be disappointed if Wenger brought in Hazard this January, just that their preferences have changed. Whilst this may be typical of the Football Manager type mindset most fans adopt when it comes to transfers, is there a good reason behind it?

I for one can’t help but wonder why Arsenal fans (and other fans alike) continue to obsess over Goetze. After all, he has already said that his preference isn’t to play in the Premier League:

“I prefer to play in Spain than in the Premiership, Spanish football is more like my qualities. The dream of every footballer is to play in Spain, there are very great teams like Madrid or Barcelona.”

Despite this, Arsenal fans still hold out a vague hope that Goetze could one day be a Gunner. I have to wonder: why don’t we set ourselves more realistic targets? Aren’t we sick and tired of players who don’t really want to be at the club? The way we act and react in the transfer market sends out a big message to opposition sides and we should be focusing on creating a unit of players who aren’t just here for the money.

No easy task, but I’m sure players are out there. As for Eden Hazard, my interest hasn’t waned. There’s no doubting his quality and he has been on the watch-list for a number of Europe’s top clubs for the last half-decade. Surely it’s time that Arsenal stepped up their interest? I can’t think of a better replacement for Arshavin than Eden Hazard.

If Arsenal are to finish above Spurs this season, they will need to take action in the transfer window. Whilst a big money move isn’t a necessity, it could well be what they need to kick-start a late title charge.

When it comes to potential transfers our attention spans don’t seem to hold up very long. We’ve gone from Hazard to Goetze and most recently to Lukas Podolski. I, however am still enamoured by Hazard and hope that Wenger feels the same way.

What’s your take? What transfer do you find yourself obsessing over this festive season?

Hazard is my main choice (and has been for some 2,5 years) to play on the wing while Cesc played deep with Song, Nasri on the right and Arshavin in the “hole” with RvP/Adebayor up top. Sadly this didn’t happen. But with Song – Arteta as the midfield 3, Walcott – Hazard – Gervinho as the attacking trio and van Persie up front we’d be deadly.

Sadly this ain’t happening as Wenger is relying on Diaby to get back to full fitness. What a joke.
