Do these two youngsters signal a great future for Tottenham?

Tottenham fans are currently riding a wave of good feeling. Their ascendancy up the Premier League table continues, there have been stand out performers in all areas of the squad and if Harry Redknapp acts right this January, they’re sure to be up there competing for honours at the close of the season.

Better news still is that Tottenham’s future looks safe-guarded thanks to the influx of young talent at the club. The media seem keen to suggest that at some stage Spurs will lose all their best players, but given the players the club have in reserve I doubt this would be as damaging as most care to think.

The news that Jake Livermore and Tom Carroll have both signed new contracts with the club that will keep them at the Lane until 2016 is sure to add to fan’s positive outlooks.

Livermore has already begun to have a major impact on the Tottenham first team this season. He’s made 18 appearances in 21 competitions and managed to pick up his first Spurs goal during the 5-0 romp against Hearts back in August. He has carved out a niche as a dependable squad player and I’m sure he’ll grow in importance as the season wears on.

Carroll rejoined Tottenham after winning plaudits from fans and pundits alike during his season on loan at Leyton Orient last year. He’s made a few appearances this season and has been rewarded with a call-up to England’s U-21 squad. He has certainly been earmarked as one for the future.

Though Tottenham have been largely mediocre in the Europa League, it’s fair to say that these two have been the standouts of their campaign. You would hope that they are now given the chance to develop and not forced to stagnate as more established players get regular game time.

Yet, the chance for Livermore and Carroll to learn from the likes of Scott Parker and Luka Modric may well have been a draw for these players.

Whilst this news is overwhelmingly positive, I can’t help but wonder where Livermore and Carroll will fit into this side should Harry have a full roster of players available to him. Given the amount of talent Spurs have in midfield, Carroll and Livermore may have to go out on loan to obtain regular game-time. That, however, is an issue for the future. I, for one, am just glad that they will be Tottenham players for the foreseeable future.

If rotational play is enforced & applied, surely we will have need for these youngsters as regulars. I this way our injury problems ( as experienced in the past) will be curtailed.
