Why Jose will conquer Spain and Europe this season:

For someone who is self-dubbed the Special One, only winning the Copa del Ray – the Spanish equivalent to the FA cup –in his debut season at Real Madrid is not exactly what Jose Mourinho or fans of Los Blancos would have been expecting when the Portuguese manager arrived on the back of winning the treble at Inter Milan.

However, last season was not your ordinary season, with Jose and Real Madrid in direct competition with the side widely acclaimed to be the best club side the world has ever seen. Slightly dramatic – or so Jose would have you believe – but no matter how you put it, last season Real lost out to Barcelona in both the League and the Champions League.

Yes there were dubious decisions, such as disallowing the Higuain goal in the second leg of the Champions league tie, and downright disgraceful ones, such as the dismissal of Pepe in the first leg. But there was also a 5-1 drubbing in the league, and periods of being comprehensively outplayed. Real managed to beat Barca to the Copa when it was 11 v 11 for the entire match, and it was the only trophy Casillas lifted that season.

Mourinho refuses to call the season a failure, stating that his team amassed more points, scored more goals and conceded fewer than any team he has ever managed, including when he broke all records with Chelsea during the 2004/2005 season. Therefore, he says, it was a season to be proud of. That aside, he still went away during the summer and began a subtle rebuilding procedure at Madrid, bringing in players such as Coentrao, Sahin, Callejon and Altintop to name a few. More than this, he has focused on playing a more expansive and attacking type of football, and results and performances this season have shown this.

Real could not have been unluckier in the SuperCopa defeat, and at the very least deserved to go into extra time, looking closer to Barcelona than ever before. They are now two points clear at the top of La Liga after two brilliant performances, which provided 9 goals combined, looking solid throughout their team.

Up front Benzema is in brilliant form, keeping Higuain on the bench and in midfield there is a creativity and a fluidity not seen before. Even forgotten man Kaka has been performing well, scoring and assisting – and making a strong claim for a first team place. Defensively Real are as strong as ever, with the Mourinho mantra of not building a house starting from the roof looking like something Guardiola should have paid attention to this summer after the defensive performance against Sociedad last night.

Historically, Jose’s teams are always stronger and better in the second season he is in charge, with Chelsea and Inter Milan especially being testament to this. In his second season at the San Siro, Mourinho bought in the players he felt were needed, tightened up at the back and had Milito up top, and went on to win the treble.

There is also a stability at the Bernabeu not seen before, with the departure of Valadano and full control allowed to a manager for the first time. If anyone was going to be able to change the structure of power at Real Jose was certainly the man to do it. For the first time in a long time, Barcelona look vulnerable, especially with the lack of defensive strength they have, and you cannot always rely on the ideal that you will always score one more goal. This philosophy can cost dearly, especially when away goals come to the fore.

It will still be the biggest challenge of Mourinho’s career to dislodge Barca at the top of the pile, both domestically and in Europe, but if anyone has the ability to do it, smart money would be on the Special One and his Real Madrid side.
