Is this man the key to Manchester City success?

|

All successful sides have large squads brimming with talent which can be swapped and changed to an extent which does not diminish the longterm ambitions of the club. Football is most obviously a squad game, yet increasingly the top sides still have that one marquee player who can rise above the rest, raising their team-mates games in the process.

Teams just aren’t the same without their star attraction. Manchester United have Wayne Rooney, Real Madrid have Ronaldo and despite their embarrassment of riches, Barcelona’s stand out man is Lionel Messi. For Manchester City to be consistently grouped with these illustrious teams they will need such an individual, and one is certainly making his point.

Quickly it is becoming apparent that this season, David Silva is the star attraction. Movement, goals, assists and general positive team play have seen him rewarded with prominence in a side packed with potential star turns of this type. Silva though has a pedigree which is colleagues cannot boast. Winning numerous plaudits with the national team have given him the experience of success, which is something Nasri and Aguero don’t yet have.

David Silva started his career at Valencia before moving to Manchester City after the World Cup in 2010. One of the few star players in the Spanish squad to have no links with the big two of Real Madrid or Barcelona, it could be said that it raised eye brows when he made the move to Manchester City. Lucrative for his bank account, there could be more professional reasons for this. Although a major part of the team  for the Euro 2008 success, he played a more reduced role in the 2010 victory.

Silva knew that to maintain his prominence in the national side he needed to do something different, which involved him turning his back on his native Spain. Doubtlessly this has had a positive impact on his game, the English Premier League gradually giving his own game more strength, allowing him to kick on to the next level and be regarded as potentially one of the best creative players in the world.

As impressive as Carlos Tevez was last season, Silva has the ability to be as equally as impressive whilst improving the performances of others. Tevez also turned his back on City and seemingly jumps at any attempt to leave. As talented as he his, Mancini realizes now that he cannot be relied upon and recent events in Munich would seem to prove this. Goals are now spread throughout the side, and without the Tevez there is a sense that there is a greater notion of freedom afforded to David Silva.

David Silva to truly be classed in the same group as Rooney, Messi or Ronaldo will need to find his league form in the Champions League. This is something that Manchester City and David Silva have so far struggled with. He has been far to easily marked out of games. But patience must be given to a side which has not had experience in this competition before. What is clear though is that any success that Manchester City will have will surely depend on consistent form of the little spaniard.
