Why losing Samir and Cesc should not be a problem

|

The seemingly impending loss of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri has undoubtedly caused Arsenal a major headache this transfer window. If the duo were to leave though, the questions of what the club can gain and how the losses could impact on the club seems foregrounded.

Fabregas and Nasri departing for Barcelona and Manchester City respectively is not an attractive prospect. Losing your lynch pin to arguably the best team in the world currently, offers one major problem. That is the potential for him to play against you in the Champions League. Notice this is also the case with Nasri, however with him there is the added danger of him playing in the Premiership also.

To combat the issue on the European front, Wenger, well within his rights has opted to name the want away midfielders in his squad for the CL qualifier against Udinese. This has drawn a mixed response over what exactly Wenger is doing. Some believe that it could be a ploy to speed up the interested parties into acting faster than they intended. Others though cite a very simple motivation, cup tie the players so they cannot come back to haunt Arsenal in the Champions League.

Marouane Chamakh has publically voiced his thoughts on the matter, stating he believes the pair will be departing the Emirates this summer. Unearthing ‘reliable’ players to step in should the players be sold is Arsene’s priority according to the Moroccan.

In Aaron Ramsey though, they could have an almost ready made replacement for Fabregas. The midfielder though slightly injury plagued is back for the new season and raring to stake a claim for a place in the starting XI. His work rate is unquestionable and with an eye for a pass he could come on in leaps and bounds with a starting berth this season, rather like Jack Wilshere last year.

Gervinho has been brought in and during pre-season looked as impressive as he did in Ligue 1 for Lille. Admittedly he has less class about him than Nasri, but his pace and directness may provide more telling creative contributions than predicted.

Arsenal’s business model is highly revered. The club have used funds gained from spectacular work in the transfer market by Wenger in the past to acquire a stadium of the highest calibre. This was to enable the club to compete financially and commercially with the likes of Barcelona and now they appear to be at a stage in which they should not sell their best players as they should not need the money as badly as perhaps they did a few years ago.

However, regarding Fabregas the trophy drought and friends at Barcelona makes his case an emotional and almost extenuating one. This leads people to conclude it is maybe the ‘right time’ to sell him, he will be missed but they can cope. Nasri’s situation is different; he appears to have been baited away by the striking emergence of the unignorable Citizens project. This again seems like a circumstantial desire to move and should not be used as evidence in any argument that Arsenal are ‘falling apart’.

In summary, Arsenal will be more than fine. A cataclysmic crisis would be needed to move Arsenal away from the big boy’s table and the almost imminent departure of Fabregas and Nasri is definitely not said crisis.
