Is This Really A Good Solution For Spurs?

|

As we are all sick to the back teeth of hearing, Spurs have had some problems at the top end of the pitch for some time now.  One of the main reasons they failed to qualify for the Champions League last season was lack of goals, and as hard as Harry Redknapp has tried to fix that problem, he has so far failed.

He has started the season (albeit only one league game and one Europa League game) with Jermain Defoe as his first choice striker with Dutch maestro Van der Vaart playing just off him.  The English striker only managed to net 4 league goals last season which was hardly an inspiring return, Peter Crouch wasn’t much better and although Roman Pavlyuchenko scored a few goals he still doesn’t seem to be thought of particularly highly around White Hart Lane.

One name they have been linked to extensively is former Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor.  Now on paper that would seem a really good signing, but as someone who has watched the striker play week in and week out I can say that I am not sure he’s a particularly great solution to the clubs goal scoring problems.  Adebayor will score goals for Tottenham, but only when he is in the mood, he is almost guaranteed to score in the North London derby, but at the same time it is also a close certainty that he will do something which will result in a 3 game ban.

In pure footballing terms he is a great striker when on form, and can be absolutely unplayable but those occasions are far too inconsistent for my liking and I think Tottenham fans will find the same problem.  I see a level of similarity between Spurs and City fans in some ways, both sets of supporters like players who give everything and put it all on the line, even if they aren’t as technically gifted as others, that definitely doesn’t describe the Togolese striker.

The 27 year old fancies himself as being so much better than he actually is, he has made it publicly clear that he is holding out for a move to Real Madrid where he spent the second half of last season on loan, I think Ade is the only person in Europe though that believes he is good enough for a club of that size.  His total haul for the Spanish giants was 8 goals in 22 games, 5 of which came in the league.  When you consider that he was probably working as hard as he ever works in that period it is not a particularly impressive tally.

The size of the players ego however doesn’t end there, according to todays Mirror he has started telling his prospective new club that they must sign new players in order for him to sign, Wayne Rooney this guy isn’t.  The newspaper reckon that he has insisted they sign Lassana Diarra and assure him of other quality signings before he agrees to a potential move, I find this attitude bizarre since if he doesn’t deem the Spurs squad good enough his only other option is the City reserve squad, it seems pretty farcical to me, he must really believe that a massive club will come in for him, something which patently isn’t going to happen.

For me Spurs can do a lot better and deserve a lot better, the frustration is that in footballing terms he is great, but his attitude stinks and I fear that Tottenham will get similar treatment to that which City got, an electric first couple of months and then one good performance every 3 or 4 games.  Obviously the North London club are in need of a new striker, but I just think they could do a lot better than Adebayor even if its a free signing as is now being reported, his huge wages will simply not make the deal worth it.

Obviously as a City fan I would love to be rid of Ade but that doesn’t mean that I think he is a good fit for Tottenham, he will score for them against Arsenal, but I fear after a time they could be few and far between.

I must admit I was expecting this to be written by a Spurs fan ! Nice to see some solid comments rather than the usual rantings and other club slaggings. I totally agree with your views regarding his ego. You just beat us to the CL spot yet he deems us not good enough for his talents ! It would be good to see the arrogant fool rot in your reserves – It’s what he deserves.
As you say he thinks Real will be in for him. They dont want you Ade ! Wake up !
It will be terrible for City to suffer his whineing all season whch is what I think you need to get rid.
We already have the whineing CroRat so i dont think we could cope with another one.

I just reckon Spurs could do better than Ade, as City fans we loved him at first because he gave it a bloody good go, but it just didn’t last and his attitude stank after a while.

Luckily for you, it sounds like its only a season long loan at this point!

First of all I would like to say your article although fairly well written is scathing and I have to question why a City fan would want to give Spurs an opinion on a player that is surplus to requirements at your club. It has been well documented that Adebayor has an attitude problem as demonstrated at the two clubs he played for in the UK namely Arsenal and Man City, all sorts of assumptions have been made by the media and the most popular is that he has an enormous ego however, the real question we should be asking is why have these two clubs failed miserably to bring the best out of this talented player. Wenger has gone on record as saying that the guy is a real talent, Mancini thought so too. The real reason Adebayor left Arsenal was simply that they couldn’t meet his wage demands when it came to negotiating a new improved contract, decided to capitalize on him instead of losing him on a free. If they could have reached a satisfactory agreement, they wouldn’t have sold him. At City he became frustrated by all the chopping and changing by Mancini who is worse than tinker man Ranieri one of a long line of ex Chelsea managers. You say that he only scored 8 goals in 22 appearances at Real Madrid, what you didn’t say was that a majority of those games was as a substitute and the only reason they are reluctant to sign him on a permanent contract is that they have more expensive forwards (Higuain and Benzema) on exorbitant wages therefore automatic choices ahead of him. Real are reluctant to add another high wage bench warmer to their squad yet Adebayor appeared very happy there, perhaps a better man manager in Mourino. Adebayor is head and shoulders better than the forwards we currently have at Spurs and he could become a real hero for us given the right support.

Well firstly, I like to think of myself as a football fan generally not just a Manchester City fan.

I think you raise some very interesting and perfectly valid points, what I would say though is that he was hardly a fan favourite at Arsenal when he left, many lacklustre performances had damaged his reputation with the fans.

He was never fancied by Mancini, I suppose mostly because he was there when he took charge, and he wasn’t hard working enough for Mancini either, he never really took to him.

I don’t for one second question his ability, I just don’t believe his attitude is right, there are many players round the world with tremendous potential, but if they don’t have the right mind set they never achieve what they can. He will almost certainly be the best forward at Spurs when on form, but I question how often that will be.
