A Recent History Of Scotland V England In Europe

|

On Friday, Hearts were drawn against Spurs in the Europa League.  Scotland versus England is always a big occasion, so here’s a look back at recent European clashes between the two countries:

Rangers vs Leeds United (Champions League Qualifier 92/93)

Leeds travelled to Ibrox for the first leg, and Gary McAllister scored in the first minute.  Leeds goalkeeper John Lukic punched the ball into his own net to level the tie, before Ally McCoist scored to give Rangers a 2-1 victory.  In the return leg, Rangers took an early lead as Mark Hateley scored from 30 yards.  McCoist scored in the second half to give Rangers a 4-1 aggregate lead, and Rangers progressed despite a late Eric Cantona goal.

Celtic vs Liverpool (UEFA Cup 97/98)

Liverpool took an early lead in the first leg of the tie, when Michael Owen scored in the 6th minute.  But Celtic fought back, with second half goals from Jackie McNamara and Simon Donnelly giving the home side a 2-1 lead.  It appeared Celtic would take a lead to Anfield, but a stunning solo effort from Steve McManaman in the 89th minute gave Liverpool a draw.  Liverpool progressed following a 0-0 draw at Anfield.

Celtic vs Blackburn Rovers & Liverpool (UEFA Cup 02/03)

On their way to the 2003 UEFA Cup final, Celtic twice faced Premier League opposition.  They drew Blackburn in the second round and a late first leg goal gave Celtic a 1-0 lead.  Henrik Larsson scored early in the second leg and Celtic went on to win 2-0 after Chris Sutton scored in the second half.

Celtic reached the quarter-finals and drew Liverpool.  The first leg took place in Glasgow, with Henrik Larsson giving Celtic the lead in the second minute.  The game ended 1-1 after Emile Heskey equalised, but the game is infamous for an incident involving El Hadji Diouf.  After falling into the front rows of a stand, Diouf turned and spat at Celtic fans.  He was given a two match ban by UEFA.  Celtic scored on the stroke of half-time in the second leg when an Alan Thompson freekick gave them the lead in the tie, and in the 81st minute, John Hartson’s 25 yard strike sealed Celtic’s semi-final place.

Rangers vs Man Utd (Champions League Group 03/04)

Facing each other in back-to-back matches, United travelled to Glasgow for the first fixture.  Phil Neville scored the only goal as Man Utd won 1-0.  The return fixture was dominated by United, and Diego Forlan gave them an early lead before a Ruud Van Nistelrooy double sealed a 3-0 win.

Celtic vs Man Utd (Champions League Group 06/07)

The two sides played out a minor classic at Old Trafford.  Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink opened the scoring for Celtic before a Louis Saha double gave United the lead.  Just before half-time, Shunsuke Nakamura scored a stunning freekick to level the match.  An early second half goal from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave Man Utd the win.  The return fixture in Glasgow saw Celtic win 1-0 following another spectacular Nakamura freekick, with Louis Saha missing a penalty.

Celtic vs Man Utd (Champions League Group 08/09)

Two years later, Celtic again faced United in the group stages.  This time United won convincingly in Manchester, as a Dimitar Berbatov double and Wayne Rooney strike gave them a 3-0 win.  In Glasgow, Scott McDonald gave Celtic an early lead, but Ryan Giggs equalised with just a few minutes remaining to secure a point.

Celtic vs Arsenal (Champions League Qualifier 09/10)

Arsenal won 2-0 in Glasgow, with Gary Caldwell scoring an own goal after William Gallas had given Arsenal the lead.  Although Arsenal comfortably won 3-1 at the Emirates, Eduardo was controversially banned for simulation after winning a first half penalty.  Arsenal successfully appealed the decision after proving that Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc had made contact with Eduardo.

Rangers vs Man Utd (Champions League Group 10/11)

Rangers and Man Utd were drawn together in the group stages again last season, and played out a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in the first round of matches.  Rangers frustrated United in Glasgow, but United won the game in the 87th minute with a Wayne Rooney penalty after Steven Naismith had fouled Fabio.
