Phil Jones too has great potential and, like De Gea, is very young. If he establishes a strong partnership with Chris Smalling, for club and country, as well as developing at the rate Smalling did at United last season, then the reluctant praise that Ferguson received for getting a deal done for the centre back so early in the window from other managers will be justified. Besides, Neville retired half way through last season, and barely much of an impact on the results of the team until he did hang up his boots so Jones comes into the squad will less of a weight on his shoulders than De Gea and Young.
I still think Ferguson needs one more player. He needs a proper replacement for Scholes. Somebody who possesses that creative flair and passing ability that can start attacks: a World Class central midfielder. He has been reported to have interest in Wesley Sneijder, Luka Modric and Samir Nasri. All would work well at United and are exactly what the Scot requires if he is truly going to rival Barcelona in Europe this coming season.
Barcelona, having recently signed Alexis Sanchez, could be one up on United regarding World Class player acquisition. He will surely make a regular first team place for himself at Camp Nou, in the coming season with his pace, skill and quality shown during his early career in Italy. Pair this with the probable purchase of Cesc Fabregas and Barcelona are adding to squad already bursting with star quality and World Class talent.
Ferguson must buy another if he is to rival the Catalan giants. He has to be a proven footballer with lots of ability and a track record of high performance at the top level. Perhaps the most efficient method of judging the sort of player is to look in the direction of Pep Guardiola and reason whether or not the Spaniard, at the helm of possibly the best football team in history, would want the player in his team. If he could make it into the Barcelona starting XI then he is good enough to rival them. This is the only way that Ferguson will achieve his new goal with Manchester United.
