How I survived a summer without Football:

|

I flirted with Golf briefly before getting caught up in the vehement excitement that was encompassing the Haye, Klitcsko fight. My allegiance was firmly on side of the British underdog, I saw his vitriolic comments for what they were, an incentive for non-boxing fans to watch, and I was hooked.

The fight was apparently poor, but I hadn’t noticed. Post – match I became embroiled in a discussion with my friends dad, a follower of the sport from his infancy and felt like I was holding my own. That was until I lost my concentration and began to call Chris Eubank, Kriss Akabusi. There was no coming back. The rest of the conversation took a dark turn as I was lambasted and accused of racism, before saving face and just being declared a moron.

With these disasters firmly behind me, I decided to take refuge in the game that’s always been there, and prepared to watch The Women’s World Cup and Copa America.

Unfortunately every time a match from The WWC was broadcast it seemed to collide with one thing or another and before I knew it, England were out on penalties again. I’d missed it. From what I could gather, Germany did a fine job of running the event and by not hosting the final in a half-filled Ewood Park; they easily outdid England’s 2005 European Championship efforts.

And then I found out that the Copa America was being broadcast on ESPN. I wasn’t about to pay for their subscription fee and run the risk of encountering Ray Stubbs asinine analysis.

So here we are, pre season is now in full swing and I am constantly supplied with football news to cling on to. It was a long and arduous summer but I feel like I’ve learnt something, something profound and important: that I should book my holidays more prudently next year.
