Do we as a collective owe this Manchester City star an apology?

If Carlos Tevez’s move back to Corinthians goes ahead, then surely the majority of his critics and general sceptics will have to re-evaluate and apologise?

Ed. Corinthians’ deal for Carlos Tevez appears to have fallen through, as they believe there’s not enough time to complete the deal before the close of their transfer window at 0400 BST on Thursday. They have however hinted that they may attempt to sign him once more in the January transfer window.

After five years in England, the forever departing talismanic mercenary has failed to learn any of the language other than ‘pounds per week’ and ‘transfer request’, and his insistence that Manchester’s restaurant scene consists of only two establishments has shocked and bored pretty much everyone.

To West Ham United, Tevez delayed their relegation by a couple of years, and to the Blues of Manchester, he led them to the promised land of the Champions League and to a first trophy for 35 years.  The chances are, he will enjoy a cult like hero status amongst fans of these two clubs long after he has become bored with life in Brazil, handed in a transfer request, and moved back over to either Milan or Madrid.

So what are the rest of us going to say if he takes a pay cut and re-joins Corinthians?

I for one will be holding both hands firmly in the air and stating prophetically that Carlos Tevez is a man to be admired.  A modern footballer who forgoes the riches of Premier League and European stardom to return home to Brazil, to be with his family and to eat out every night at any number of Spanish speaking restaurants.

But will this be enough for Tevez?  His passion for the game is clear from his performances.  Pick a match from any of the three English clubs for which he has played and rarely will you see him doing anything other than giving everything he can to the cause of his team and to winning.  Surely this manic work ethic can be coupled with a man who has ambition as a professional, a man whose performances would suggest to all those who watch that he is a born winner.

Prior to 2005, Corinthians’ miserable performances along with their impending financial doom had many of their fans wondering what would happen to their club.  Then along came Kia Joorabchian and his murkily run Media Sports Investment company.  Alongside Tevez, Kia brought in current Barcelona midfielder Javier Mascherano, and the once prodigious but ultimately disappointing Carlos Alberto.  Corinthians won the league title but Tevez and Mascherano went on to join West Ham United in the summer of 2006, and it was here where his rollercoaster Premier League ride began.

69 Premier League goals came in 152 Premier league games over a period of 5 seasons, with the vast majority of the goals scored in the sky blue of Manchester City.  A Goal nearly every other game is a record Tevez will be proud of, but the tantrums and controversy between all the goals is something that he will want to forget.  If his move to Corinthians goes ahead, then we might also forget, and he might even earn a portion of our respect.  But if he moves anywhere else, then it is certain that most fans will feel cheated and realise that Carlos Tevez’ consistent turbulance is financially driven, rather than anything to do with a longing to be with his family.

If Carlos does move back to Brazil to be with his family, then all of the tantrums and controversy will be, to a certain degree, accepted and understood.  After all, this is a man who according to himself wants nothing more than a normal life back in South America.

Only time will reveal his true motives and intentions, and whatever these are, you can guarantee they will be written about a lot more over what is left of this summers transfer window.

I agree with the overall sentiment of this piece but would like to correct a few points.

Firstly, ‘Home,’ for Tevez is Argentina, not Brazil. His family lives in Buenos Aires so he would still not be living with them but would be less than a 3 hour flight away.

Secondly, the language in Brazil is Portuguese, not Spanish so he might still have some language barriers in their, apparent, plethora or restaurants.
