Can Sergio Aguero become the new Argentinian hero for Man City?

|

When Carlos Tevez revealed his desire to leave Manchester City in July it was only a matter of time before a big name forward and a mega transfer fee would come to fruition this summer.

And Roberto Mancini has gone for one of the biggest in Sergio Aguero. Every summer since his rise to prominence with Athletico Madrid, Aguero has been linked with a move to one of the top Premier League sides and it seems more than likely that with all the money that the manager has at his fingertips it should be a formality to meet the £39m buy-out in the 23-year-old’s contract.

It was back in 2003 at just 15 that Aguero made his first appearance for Argentine club Indipendiente and it was not long until the goals started to flow but it was the 2005-06 season that caught the eye of Europe’s elite clubs where he scored 18 goals in 36 league appearances. A move the following summer was guaranteed and it was Atletico who got in there first playing 23 million to take him to Spain.

After taking a season to acclimatise to the new style of football, where he still managed eight goals, Aguero never looked back reaching double figures in each of the last five seasons with last season being his most prolific with 27 goals in all competitions, including getting on the score sheet in seven consecutive league games.

In terms of success, his best season was the 2009-10 when he won the UEFA Europa League and the Super Cup as well as aiding in the team’s route to the Copa del Rey final, losing out to Sevilla.

Aguero has also been a big success on the international stage with Argentina. The striker, alongside future star Lionel Messi  succeeded in winning the FIFA U20 World Cup (or as it was known in 2005 the FIFA World Youth Championships) in 2005 and then again in 2007, picking up both the Top Scorer and Player of the Tournament awards. He then won a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics with the national team before going on to feature in the World Cup in South Africa and at this year’s Copa America scoring three times in the competition before Argentine went out to Uruguay on penalties in the Quarter Finals.

If the deal does go through, then Manchester City will have them the perfect replacement to the out-bound Tevez. Both are similar types of players, using speed and their size to undo defences. But Aguero can also score goals from outside the box, from a free-kick or from the penalty spot as well as with both feet. He has much experience in Europe and playing so much international football and being only 23, that can only increase and he can only get better and develop even more.

On paper, the striking partnership with Edin Dzeko could become a very deadly one that will allow Mancini and co to continue getting better and challenging the top spots in the Premiership. Aguero compliments Dzeko who is 6ft 4 and if the two can work off each other and form an understanding then City fans have much to look forward to with the coming season.

It may take Aguero time to get to know the English way of football as it did when he first started with Madrid but if he is anything like Tevez the bedding in process should be a short one.

Sergio Aguero has all the attributes to light up the Premier League with the Blues and if the transfer can be completed then Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United should fear for the championship crown heading back to Eastlands for the first time in 43 years.
