Why Liverpool just aren’t likely to look abroad for talent this summer:

|

The prevailing wisdom among Reds fans is that Liverpool’s transfer activity will suddenly increase significantly after the transfer window on the continent opens up on July 1st.

To an extent this is wishful thinking, in my opinion, because although the Reds may have agreements in place with players we do not know about, the lack of any real talk about the club bringing in foreign players is notable.

For those that say Liverpool can only negotiate with foreign clubs after the transfer window has opened is a fallacy as can be aptly be demonstrated by Manchester United’s negotiations with Atletico Madrid over David De Gea, who was pictured arriving to have a medical at Old Trafford yesterday.

Certainly this doesn’t mean the Reds interest in foreign players will not increase after the European window opens, but I feel that many Reds fans will be left disappointed once there is not much greater talk about us tying up deals for the likes of Juan Mata, Arda Turan or Kun Aguero.

For now, it looks certain the Reds will look to tie up deals for the likes of Stewart Downing and Charlie Adam. Both deals seemed to be nearer completion than at any stage in the last few weeks with the Independent declaring that both deals are imminent.

The question that will be posed after these two deals are completed will be who is next? Are Liverpool looking to tie up these English transfers before looking abroad in search of the top names many Reds fans still crave?

Not likely, according to the likes of Rory Smith of the Daily Telegraph and Tony Barrett of The Times. Both are closely connected with the goings on in Merseyside and both have used the same mantra in recent days during interviews on talkSPORT. Both expressed that Kenny Dalglish is looking to hit the ground running next season by going after players who know the Premier League.

For the moment at least, the Reds seem to be fully focused on looking for players well versed in the style of English football. All those looking to have the names of Mata or Turan on their replica shirts, may well be disappointed by the start of the season.

I think it’s clear that no one knows who Liverpool are going for. No one knows our targets, no one knows if these players we’re linked with are a smokescreen – they certainly haven’t come from the club. The deals that we have done so far under FSG – Suarez, Carroll, Henderson, were all done within days and with very little build up to us buying the player.

Everyone seems to panic cos we’r not buying the worlds best, but why should the worlds best come to us? We’re not in Europe and we’re not the mighty Liverpool that we were in the 70’s and 80’s. People need to understand that and set their targets. We’ve still got plenty of pulling power but some of the names banded around are not the type of players we’re going to get.

Aim is to get to the champions league next season, nothing more than that. Anything more is a bonus. Now people, calm down and let KK and the board do their job and judge the players we buy at the end of the season.

Agree with Steve 100 percent. So many speculation will not help the team. Let the Management decide and I believe the owner will be more patient than the management in Real Madrid.

How is it David that, you are always soooo negative when it comes to Liverpool?. Did we not sign Suarez in January? and, were going for a foreign backup for Reina?. Why don’t we just wait and see eh?, cause me think that you are wrong!.

Well doesnt that tell you that having a transfer windows is a complete waste of time when man u can sort a keeper out months before the window is open is that not poaching why are uefa not stepped in and stoped this happening if they want football to be fair it is a complete farce certain clubs can do what they want when they want while all the other clubs dernt move for fear of being done by the fa or uefa

    Hi,
I think people should be more worried about the fact that we can’t offload all the dross players because it is that which is severely hampering us!!!
