Is it time for Chelsea to let go of their leading man?

|

Could Didier Drogba be on his way to Galatasray in return for Arda Turan? There has been a lot of speculation of Didier Drogba’s future recently and there have been rumours of a new contract, but it got me thinking, is it time to let the Ivorian powerhouse go?

I know many would class Drogba as a Chelsea legend and as much as I appreciate everything he has done for our club I feel it is time for him to leave. I find Drogba to be a disruption to the squad and a man, who when not the centre of attention struggles to realise that he is playing as part of a team.

No one can deny everything he has given to this club and without a doubt Chelsea have enjoyed his best years as a professional, however a football club must know when it is the right time to let their players leave and for me this summer is without a doubt the time.

The biggest reason for letting Didier leave this summer is the fact Chelsea Football Club have bought Fernando Torres for £50million. For years Chelsea have based their play around Drogba but now it is time to make Torres the focal point of our team and in order to obtain the best from our new number 9 we have to let Drogba leave. I have spoken to people about this and some still believe Drogba and Torres can play together but these people clearly haven’t seen these two play on the same pitch since Fernando joined in January. Drogba looks as though he would rather be anywhere than playing alongside Torres at the front of Chelsea’s attack, showing no will to communicate with him or form a front-line that will terrify the opposition.

Secondly, I have heard the idea of keeping Drogba on the bench and only using him when he is needed, as a potential solution. However Drogba will not be satisfied with a bit-part role in the team and would cause disruptions to the Chelsea camp as he sits back and watches his fellow teammates play every week. Also having a player who earns over £100,000 a week sitting on the bench would not make financial sense, especially as Chelsea look to cut their wage bill significantly.

This is why I feel that if we want to see the best from Torres, Drogba will have to find another club this summer. However, Chelsea will inevitably give him a contract extension and he will eventually end his career at The Bridge, whenever that may be, which I feel is going to be the most likely outcome as more rumours of a new deal have started to emerge.

Only time will tell, however if had my way Drogba would be on his way, leaving Chelsea fans with great memories of him rather than staying and spoiling his reputation with more prima donna antics and childish behaviour, which will only get worse as he gets older as he will not be able to perform as he did a few seasons ago.
