Why Norwich City will be a welcome addition to the Premier League next season

|

Shocks aren’t uncommon as far as Paul Lambert is concerned although taking Norwich to the Premier League in only his second season at the club must be a shock, even for this talented manager. Norwich fans must still be pinching themselves as it wasn’t so long ago they were on the receiving end of a 7-1 demolishing, somewhat ironically from Lambert’s Colchester United.

The 7-1 defeat to Lambert’s men led to the sacking of Bryan Gunn shortly afterwards. Norwich didn’t hang around and moved swiftly to secure the services of Lambert costing the club around £425,000 in compensation. His arrival at Norwich has proved to be a sensational decision by the Board as he has guided them to a second successive promotion from League 1 to the Championship and then from the Championship to the Premier League which is incredible given his limited resources.

Lambert has all the tools in his locker to survive in the Premier League; after all the Carrow Road boss was no stranger to success as a player, and it looks as though he has carried this will-to-succeed through to his managerial career.

As a player the Canaries boss has reached the pinnacle of the European game by winning the Champions League with Borrusia Dotmund in their win over Juventus in the 1997 final. Paul was deployed as a central midfielder as helped his side on the way to a  3-1 victory. A good point of comparison for Paul Lambert style is Martin O’Neill, both in the way he played and now conducts himself. Lambert played under Martin at Celtic where he won 4 League titles and finished runners up in the Uefa Cup final to Jose Mourinho’s Porto side.

Success and Lambert appear to come hand in hand but Lambert might have to perform miracles to survive in the Premier League. Although Norwich don’t have the spending power of the big guns they are going to have to put their hands deep into there pockets to survive this time around. Though the Canaries have done excellently to get his far, this League takes no prisoners. The last few seasons prove that if you don’t put the money in you are going to be in trouble and I feel this Norwich side will have to add some genuine quality if they are to make their mark. Next season is going to be a very exciting time for Norwich City and Paul Lambert. If the board give the manager adequate funds he could very well steer the club in the right direction and get them to safety next season.
