Media Watch: Manchester United tail £35m striker

|

Why Manchester United need another striker is beyond me – after all they can barely offer the Premier League’s top goal-scorer this season a starting berth in their squad. But rumours will be rumours and Givemefootball have linked Manchester United to Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema. It was only a matter of time I suppose; Benzema has been linked to just about every decent side in Europe.

The wide-scale rumour-mongering surrounding Benzema’s person is a result of his failing to hold down a starting position during his time at Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho’s leadership. It’s widely believed that given his ability and talent, Benzema will agitate for a move elsewhere this summer, so he can showcase his football on a more regular basis. As a result he’s been linked to Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City and now Manchester United.

The rumour rags will have been hugely disappointed by the claims of Benzema’s agent recently that the 23-year-old has no plans to move on from Real Madrid this summer. He told the Press:

“Karim is not going to leave Real Madrid for Arsenal or anywhere else, to make it absolutely clear he is staying in Madrid.”

Stated in no uncertain terms. In fact this is one of the only transfer rumours I’ve seen whose plausibility declines as you read on. In all likelihood, Benzema will remain with Real Madrid, at least until next January, when the rumours can start afresh.

Even if Benzema’s not interested in leaving Madrid just yet, Givemefootball may still have been on the money about Manchester United’s interest in the player, right? I doubt it. With Javier Hernandez, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov in tow, United have one of the best strikeforces in Europe and any further additions seems completely unnecessary.

It’s widely acknowledged that despite winning the Premier League this year, some changes do need to be made to this United squad. But surely it’s not upfront that Sir Alex Ferguson needs to focus on? With Paul Scholes set to retire I could understand if United were seeking to bolster their midfield. Buying Benzema on the other hand would take away the funds necessary to acquire a player like Wesley Sneijder.

With Manchester United unable to make two big money purchases this summer, Sir Alex Ferguson needs to make sure he gets his priorities right. Here’s hoping that United bolster their midfield and don’t bring in any more strikers.
