Is Liverpool’s Season Ticket 6.5% price-rise justified?

|

This week my club announced its season ticket prices for the 2011/12 season with a rise in prices of around 6.5% compared to last year.  This can be broken down by a 4% increase by the club and a 2.5% increase in VAT by the Government.  This means that the lowest price for a Kop season ticket will be £725, purchased online and before a certain date.  Again this season we have finished trophyless and going back to my first paragraph, potentially we will not be part of Europe’s also rans.  Therefore, as our Managing Director Ian Ayre put it, the rise is in line with the economy and our ability to compete in a competitive football market.  There will also be a greater demand for match tickets should we fail to secure 5th place as is likely.

I would under normal circumstances find this substantial rise hard to swallow considering the dire football we were subjected to in the first half of the season but although I will stuggle to find the extra cash, I feel that there are better times and better football ahead.  John W. Henry and Tom Werner are not Tom Hicks and George Gillett (it still angers me to type their names).

They are experts in their field, albeit not in English football, and they are aware of the scale of the job ahead. They are not making golden promises; they are sitting back taking everything in and taking their time because they know that their decisions will be crucial to the club’s reputation and future standing in World Football.  Although I remain a little sceptical due to the previous owners, they have impressed me with their actions so far, especially with the full time appointments of King Kenny and Steve Clarke.  They have made it clear that there will be money made available in the summer to strengthen the squad and I’m sure we will be able to compete if we can kick off next season with all the positives taken from this season.

It is for this reason and under the current circumstances that I feel the rise in season ticket price for the 2011/12 season is justified and I won’t mind paying the extra money if we see the entertaining pass and move football from the Dalglish Liverpool of 2011 and not the negative defeatist football of the Hodgson Liverpool of 2010.
