Charlie Adam has been valued by some publications at around £14m. A more realistic price-range for the Blackpool midfielder is about £8-10m, but Rangers must still be frustrated that they sanctioned his sale to Blackpool for a mere £500,000. After years of coming in and out of the Rangers side Charlie could never quite cement himself into the starting eleven. It‘s clear that Charlie Adam has found his calling at Blackpool in a way that he never could at Rangers. After all Walter Smith did deploy Charlie as a left-sided midfielder, which is clearly not his best position.
Although his time in Glasgow didn’t see him reach the heights he had set for himself, they were certainly not wasted as the player gained valuable experience. Charlie was part of the Rangers squad who made it to the UEFA Cup final in the 2006/07 season when they were defeated in the final 2-0 by Zenit St Petersburg.
Blackpool boss Ian Holloway saw something in Charlie when he bought the rugged looking Scot from Rangers. Holloway made Charlie his Captain and by playing him through the middle of park, the player himself has flourished and become the beating heart of the team. The Blackpool faithful didn’t have to wait long for Adam to find his feet when the player grabbed 17 goals in all competitions in his first season also helping Blackpool gain promotion to the Premier League.
After taking the bull by the horns Charlie had a wonderful debut season in the Premier League, scoring 11 goals so far this term. At times during the season you could argue that Charlie has won games single handed. Adam has scored some great goals from free kicks which has led to Sir Alex Ferguson saying “that Charlie’s left leg is worth 12 million alone due to his delivery”. Blackpool still have a chance of survival this season but the odds are that Charlie will be playing his football away from Bloomfield road this season.
So where do we see Charlie next season? With Liverpool looking to bolster their squad, Charlie could possibly be the man to fill the void left by Xabi Alonso? There could be plenty of takers for the Scot this summer where a lot of Premier League clubs could benefit from the delivery of Adam. Everton, Tottenham and Villa could all do a lot worse than to consider a move for Adam as his leadership and goals would surely benefit any of these sides. Until the summer we’ll just have to wait and see what the destination is for this midfield maestro.
