Can Manchester United really afford to invest in Luka Modric?

|

Exactly how much is Luka Modric worth to Tottenham?Despite the importance of Gareth Bale and Rafael van der Vaart to Tottenham’s success this season, it’s fair to say that both player’s contributions have paled in comparison to those of Luka Modric. Despite impressing sporadically during his first couple of seasons with Spurs, this has been the year in which his stature and standing at the club has sky-rocketed.

Adept with both feet, complete with great vision and reading of the game, Modric is the beating heart of Tottenham’s midfield. If the central playmaker hasn’t established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, he’s certainly the most inventive. Only one player rivals him in the creativity stakes, and that’s Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas who has spent a long time out injured this season.

With the kind of performances that Modric is putting in on a weekly basis, it’s none too surprising that he’s attracted the attention of Manchester United, who are looking to bolster their midfield. There have been complaints at times this season regarding a lack of spark from the centre of United’s midfield and the likes of Michael Carrick and Anderson have often been scapegoated for poor performances. With Paul Scholes on the way out, the belief is that United need to sign a big name talent this summer.

Luka Modric could be just the ticket. He has the requisite Premier League experience and he’s clearly talented enough to make it at the club.

The trouble, for Manchester United, is that Tottenham will be unwilling to give up their star-player without one hell of a fight. Whether or not they earn Champion’s League football this year, there will be a desperate attempt to keep hold of their best players during the summer and Luka Modric tops that list.

It wasn’t so long ago that Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp told the Press he wouldn’t sell the Croatian, even for £1 billion. Now obviously that astronomical sum was pulled out of thin air in an attempt to ward off interested customers, but it’s fair to say that United would require a large amount of cash to tempt Tottenham to release their best performer.

The reality of the situation is that Manchester United simply can’t afford Luka Modric. Would Tottenham be willing to sell for £40m? Who knows. £50m? Perhaps – but can United afford to splash this kind of cash on one player? I fully expect Luka Modric to remain a Tottenham player for at least another season. So where does this leave Manchester United?

Wesley Sneijder has been on the United radar for quite some time and it’s clear to me, as it has been for some time, that he’s the best possible transfer candidate for Sir Alex Ferguson. Corriere dello Sport reported last week that Inter Milan were resigned to losing the 26-year-old and as such, United would be able to pick up Sneijder for a much cheaper fee than any potential fee for Modric.

He too has the talent and ability necessary to make it at the club; he just comes with a more manageable price-tag.
