Who’s the better player: Hernandez or Suarez?

|

Two players who have proven themselves to be absolutely essential to their respective clubs this season: Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez. The similarities between the two players are more wide-ranging than the simple fact that both their second-names end in ‘ez’. I’ve selected these two to battle it out, because they’ve both been revelations in the Premier League this season, they are both attacking-minded and represent two rivals clubs. My question is as follows: if you could only have one of these players on your team, who would you pick?

I do admit that Suarez is an entirely different kind of striker to Hernandez and that it’s difficult to assess who is better, given that they both play in entirely different set-ups. Given this difficulty, it’s entirely possible that Liverpool fans will vouch for Suarez, whilst United fans will prefer Hernandez. Hopefully a few neutrals will weigh in with some degree of objectivity.

I’m neither a Manchester United fan nor a Liverpool fan, but it’s clear to me which player I’d rather have in my side.

Suarez strikes me as a player in the Wayne Rooney mould. He’s willing to drop deep, works hard, brings the best out of his team-mates (whoever they may be) and can get forward and score too. Hernandez is more of an out-and-out striker. His movement is unrivalled throughout the Premier League and his goal-scoring ability is quite remarkable, as evidenced below:

In domestic competitions:

Luis Suarez: 9 Appearances for Liverpool – 2 goals. 1 goal every 4-5 games.
Javier Hernandez: 39 Appearances for Manchester United – 18 goals. 1 goal every 2 games.

At International level:

Luis Suarez: 38 Appearances for Uruguay – 16 goals. Almost 1 goal every 2 games.
Javier Hernandez: 23 Appearances for Mexico – 14 goals. Almost 2 goals every 3 games.

On a purely goal-scoring basis, it’s a no-brainer and Hernandez is the forerunner, but does Suarez have enough to his game in other areas to make him a better acquisition? If we disregard goals entirely, Suarez’s all-round contribution to Liverpool is certainly greater than Hernandez’s contribution to Manchester United. He also has better feet and technique than his Mexican rival.

Despite the Uruguayan’s strengths in this regard, I’d still have to elect Hernandez as the more ‘vital’ player. His movement is unbelievable, he has a frustrating knack of getting in front of defenders, and he’s always in the right place at the right time. He’s also remarkably calm in front of goal considering his young age.

These are two very exciting players, that we’re privileged to have in the Premier League. But who would you rather have on your side?

Chalk and chips, far too different to be compared for any reasonable distinctions to be made. Suarez is a la Rooney a more of a centre forward than a striker, a playmaker who connects midfield to attack. Hernandez is a striker who lives on the shoulder of the last defender a la Torres in his pomp.

  • Chips says:

I would definately pick Suarez any time any day. Apart from scoring goals you should also look at his assissts that lead to goals! Now that is a team player and in my books that is very vital.

  • howler says:

not a valid comparison one is a poacher
type striker, and the other is a
playmaking striker. One thing I will say is that Fergie got a cracker, the buy of the season .

Though we have a great all round attacker in
    Suarez.

Suarez isn’t just a striker – he can make something happen from anywhere in the oppositions half. He’s already got 5 assists in his 9 games too. Hernandez is made redundant if he doesn’t get service. Suarez gets my pick.

  • Paul says:

its a no brainer for me as hernandez is the best one and its hes first season while luis has only come half way through the season so lets wait till next season and chico will win the premier league and maybe the champions league in hes first season

  • Retard #1 says:

To compare Luis Suárez to Hernández is an insult to the Uruguayan, as he is not only head and shoulders better, but from knees up (if you catch my drift).

Needless to say, Suárez is world class, while Hernandez relies on good delivery to achieve to only thing he’s good at; finishing, Suárez is much more an all-round player.

  • Guy says:

Would be better to compare Hernandez’ first 9 games to that of Suarez (when considering goals scored), in order to give a fairer reflection.

Why have you not taken assists into account?? They are a huge part of Suarez’ game. Surely this would influence his importance to the team?

You appear to have found stats to support your opinions as opposed to forming your opinions based on facts/stats.

hernandez has done well for a season. suarez has done well for a while now in a weaker league. suarez just got to a struggling liverpool and has provided immense creativity. hernandez has scored goals in a united team that has created chances even if they dont play well. on pure form, hernandez cause of his finishing and linkup play but overall, suarez as he not only scores but his creativity is almost unstoppable. then again, different kind of players so its unfair to compare.

  • starry says:

is like compering ant and elephant bcos of d ‘nt’ ending both names.suarez 100per better dan hernandez bcos of his creativity, skills, pace and quality.

  • Mike says:

As a United fan, Suarez is the better all round player, but Hernandez is the better signing, considering he was brought for around £6M but both are quality in their own right.

  • Ed says:

Please Suarez is a DIRTY twit dont ever compare a guy that make’s the beautiful game look good with a pathetic cheat like that idiot..

    • Luisito says:

Come on you slumpy Ed.! true players like suarez always hunger to win. Maybe u do anything same in split sec. like he did in Q FINAL Wc2010! (3 yrs more to wait). penalty and red card had given to him with no argue.. He doesnt cheat with lazy diving like cristano or nani.. In fact, he has unstoppable spirit in every minute even the team have 3 goals or more!

  • gerrard@hotmail.com says:

both players good suarez and hernandez 2 diferent qualities players so for me both player is good bkz they do verry verry well and i hope suarez will b pruve more next seasson.

  • ss says:

as a pool fan hernandez is better in the air (excellent) and is a more clinical finisher. he relies on good service and performs better with half chances than suarez. he is more likely to be selfish in the area however this is justified based on his goal returns.
suarez is physically stronger, commits defenders into areas they dont want to go into and opens up areas for team mates to exploit. suarez will also run at defenders all day long either directly or out wide. he can also spot a pass.

based on value for money i would go for hernandez as he cost relatively little.
on value to a team i would go for suarez as he has had a major impact in transforming the fortunes of liverpool and his energy and drive is obviously driving his team mates on.

suarez is a messitype player who scores n create assists, takes freekicks or set pieces, while chicha is a ninstelrooytype who just knows how to find d back of d net.biase aside we all know who’s better.SUAREZ

Fashion will change according to climate, warm weather and cold weather, ie warm clothes for cool clothes for the season. Fix a wooden or white curtain pole to the wall, positioning it at the appropriate height, add beautiful end finials.
