Media Watch: United capture Ashley Young and Ashley Cole for £50m

|

Ashley Cole, despite all his ability on the pitch, gets a lot of stick from the fansSir Alex Ferguson is readying to bring both Ashley Cole and Ashley Young to Manchester United in a £50m swoop. So says Givemefootball.com.

Remember yesterday? It was April Fools. That means you read every headline that came with your morning paper with a degree of trepidation. Every article was just an undefined attempt at pulling your leg right?

Well, Givemefootball.com collated some of the more interesting April 1st headlines together and left it up to us to decide which were April Fools and which had a degree of truth about them. So when it comes to United’s £50m swoop for the two Ashley’s is there any validity – or are we all being taken for fools?

Ashley Young has been banded about as a potential transfer target for a number of clubs for the last couple of months. His recent showing in the last batch of England games have only furthered the media’s contention that Young will seek a move away from Aston Villa. However, up until now, the forerunners for Young’s signature are thought to have been Spurs and Liverpool.

Despite this, yesterday’s Sun ran with a story that suggested United were closing in on a £25m deal with Villa for Young. Whilst that would likely be enough cash to secure his services, you have to wonder if cash-strapped United would sanction it. Young’s good – but is he £25m worth of good? Shouldn’t United shop abroad this summer and bring in talent on the cheap (at least in relative terms)? If United need to bolster their wings, then I’m sure they’d consider the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard before considering Young – who looks destined to end up at Liverpool.

As for the Ashley Cole story – it’s absolute bunkum. Cole’s contract with Chelsea runs until 2013 and he’s their first-choice left back. What reason do Chelsea have to sell – especially to a title-rival such as Manchester United? Do United have the resources to deal with Ashley Cole’s wage demands (£120,000 – don’t forget how much he freaked out when Arsenal tried to cut £5k off of weekly pay). What’s wrong with Patrice Evra? The story raises too many questions.

It’s nothing short of bizarre. So lacking in plausibility that I doubt it fooled anybody.

Whilst I wouldn’t rule out Young moving to United I would say that chances are slim. The chances of both deals going through are basically nil.
