Media Watch: Nani on his way to City this summer in a £40m move

|

Reports suggest that Nani could be on his way to Manchester City in a £40m moveI’ve developed a tendency for taking any transfer rumour involving a deal between Manchester City and Manchester United with a pinch of salt – especially when it concerns a star player. As such, I eyed the news, as reported on Caughtoffside.com – that Manchester City are considering making a move for United winger Nani – whilst guarding against a number of natural reservations.

The Portuguese international has reportedly been seeking to renegotiate a contract with United that would see him jump up a pay-grade or two. It’s believed that Nani is currently earning a measly £60k a week and hoping to find some equality with the likes of Dimitar Berbatov who pockets £100k a week. Whilst United’s financial situation may make them wary of increasing wages (especially only a year into a four year contract) moneybags Manchester City have no such problem.

Should Nani be willing to consider a move across Manchester, City would be more than able to stump up the £100k a week that he’s expecting. Roberto Mancini is thought to be seeking to add a little more creative flair to his already packed midfield. Nani, it seems, could be the perfect man for the job. Whilst inconsistency has plagued him the past and he has lived, in general, under the shadow of a certain Cristiano Ronaldo, he has really come to the fore over the past year. In fact if you’re looking for creativity, look no further – he has the most assists in the Premier League thus far this season.

It’s thought that Man City are willing to offer £40m (not quite sure how that figure was plucked out of the air) to acquire the United winger’s services.

Let’s make one thing clear: this deal has basically no chance of ever happening. Even if City were genuinely interested, there’s no way that United would be willing to sell to one of their rivals – particularly a rival with a genuine chance of providing competition for the Premier League next season. When you further consider that Nani is tied down to a four year deal at Old Trafford, it’s clear that United hold all the cards in this situation.

Another thing that doesn’t quite add up about this rumour: why, if City are seeking creativity, would they make life so difficult for themselves when there are a number of talented youngsters out there who will be available this summer. Take Chilean winger Alexis Sanchez, who Serie A club Udinese have recently announced will be available for £30m in the summer. That’s a significantly cheaper price tag for a player, that, for my money, is better than Nani. Furthermore, with the likes of Eden Hazard and Ashley Young available for less, why would City make life difficult for themselves by going after a £40m winger currently playing for their rivals?

Expect City to look elsewhere this summer.

Yeah this story is bulls***. Nani will get a payrise and remain a United player for a long time.
