Have Barcelona got their estimation of Fabregas’ worth right?

|

How much is Cesc Fabregas worth to Arsenal? An article in today’s Sun set me thinking – what exactly is the worth of Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas? If Arsenal fans across the globe had to get together and agree upon a price-tag for the Spaniard at what amount would they be willing to relinquish his services?

Let me make it clear – I believe that Cesc Fabregas, when fully fit, is the best midfielder currently playing in the Premier League. Nobody else can create space for himself in the same manner and nobody else has the same depth of vision in combination with a sublime passing ability than Fabregas. I can’t be the only one that is a little fed up with the constant questions over his future. There has long been a feeling amongst Arsenal fans that Cesc will inevitably leave the Gunners to join boyhood club Barcelona. A feeling of forlorn certainty that has gradually moulded into acceptance.

They may not want him to go, but as it’s more than likely he will one day, what kind of price should they be expecting for his services from Barcelona?

The Sun claims that Sandro Rosell, Barca’s president, has announced that the club would not be willing to offer anything over £45m for Cesc. This follows a reported £30m bid for the midfielder last summer – a bid that so woefully undervalued Fabregas that it’s laughable. Rossell said:

“The maximum amount we have to spend in the transfer market is £45million, not counting player exits. If we do not sell any players, it will not be possible to sign any player above this price.”

Is a £45m price-tag adequate for Cesc Fabregas? Should he seek a move back to Spain, ought Arsenal attempt to squeeze Barcelona harder? I note that Rosell claimed that they definitely have at least £45m to spend, but will have more once they have moved a few players on – something that is likely to happen at Barca this summer.

Barcelona are notoriously conniving when it comes to the transfer market. They tend to have little respect for opposition clubs or opposition fans and will stop at nothing to get their man. Given their dealings with Barcelona in the past, Arsenal should feel no shame in forcing the Spanish giants to prove that they really want Cesc Fabregas. In my estimation, he’s one of the best midfielders in the world and in today’s market where Fernando Torres is valued at £50m and Andy Carroll at £35, I think Arsenal should look for something between £50-55m. He is their best player, the beating heart of their team and he still has many years of football ahead of him.

With a price-tag like that Barcelona will have to pause for consideration – can they afford to break the bank to add another midfielder to an already congested area of their squad?

Arsenal cannot allow Barcelona to dictate Cesc Fabregas’ value. He is a Gunner and he loves playing for the club. If he should decide to move on to Barcelona in the summer he will want Arsenal to get the best price possible for him. Barcelona need reminding that the ball is in Arsenal’s court, not theirs.
